Description

AC/DC was regaining momentum in 1988 with their masterpiece “BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO.” Following the hugely popular “MALMO 1988,” the second installment of the master taper “KK” collection is now available as a three-disc set with video footage from the same day. This set contains two audience recordings born from a single show. Discs 1 and 2 feature superb audience recordings from the “Stockholm performance on March 25, 1988,” while Disc 3 contains audience shots (approximately 40 minutes). I’ve been rambling on about the “second installment” and the “KK collection,” but for those unfamiliar with “MALMO 1988,” this might be confusing. To explain everything from the beginning, let’s start by looking at an overview of their activities at the time. 《February 1st: “BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO” released》・February 1st-22nd: Australia (14 shows) ← *SHOOK THE NIGHTS・March 7th-13th: UK (6 shows) ← *FEEL THE HEAT・March 15th-April 13th: Europe (21 shows) ← ★HERE★《Malcolm Young leaves → Young joins》・May 3rd-June 25th: North America #1 (45 shows)・July 20th-September 11th: North America #2 (46 shows)・October 4th-November 13th: North America #3 (28 shows) ← *BURNING UP THE TOWN《Malcolm returns / Simon Wright leaves》This was AC/DC in 1988. During the “BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO Tour,” Malcolm Young left the tour midway due to serious alcoholism. Stevie Young took his place. The Stockholm performance featured in this release was the seventh show of the “European” leg, just before the band change occurred. It was a concert six days (three shows) after “MALMO 1988.” This release is a three-disc set that archives that show in live album and video. DISC 1-2: Superb recordings unearthed from a renowned collector’s collection This release is not only close in show quality to “MALMO 1988,” but is also a genuine sister work in terms of content. It is a series of recordings by the same recording engineer. That recording engineer is the much-talked-about “KK” collection. He was a master who was active in Sweden in the late 80s, and his numerous superb recordings have shaken the collector world. However, the person making this release is not “KK” himself, but another prominent collector, “GManOF.” He is also a recording engineer who left behind many masterpieces in the 80s, and it seems they were trading partners back then, as he owned a first-generation cassette of KK recordings. This release has been digitized from that treasured master. The sound is superb, possessing the exquisite quality characteristic of the “KK” collection, which is also evident in “MALMO 1988.” The air in the arena is clear as if it has been washed away, and the core of the performance sound, which reaches straight to the listener, is powerful with rich density, clearly capturing even the most delicate details. While the tone is unmistakably that of a soundboard recording, checking each element reveals a richness comparable to a broadcast recording. “MALMO 1988,” which seemed like a miracle, was not a matter of chance or miracle, but the result of high technical skill. This work is a sister work that proves that fact. DVD: A secret 40 minutes of footage where you can witness the rampage of a young Angus This work includes not only this superb live album, but also audience-shot footage from the same day. Filmed from the stands on the left side of the stage (Malcolm Young’s side), you can dynamically witness Angus Young’s aggressive rampage. Moreover, the master quality is superb, and the colors are vivid. Although the audio does not quite reach the level of the main recording, it has a wonderfully full sound. Furthermore, not only is the visual beauty superb, but the cinematography is also remarkable. In 1988, audience shots were still in their infancy and the techniques for filming them were not widely known, but this video defies that “common sense of 1988.” The cameraman is not simply following Angus, but is also manipulating the zoom in time with the rhythm, clearly having a great time. This doubles the dynamism of the music, making you feel excited just by watching it. Although it is only about 40 minutes long, it is a delightful video masterpiece that gives you a visceral glimpse of what’s “beyond” the main recording. This masterful live album and dynamic video depict the full show of the re-energized “BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO Tour.” As mentioned above, the video is about 40 minutes long, so let’s organize the setlist to see which songs are included. 70s (8 songs) – High Voltage: The Jack / High Voltage / T.N.T. – Rock Soul: Whole Lotta Rosie / Let There Be Rock – Others: Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (★) / Jailbreak (★) / Highway to Hell 80s (9 songs) – Back in Black: Shoot to Thrill (★) / Back in Black (★) / Hells Bells / You Shook Me All Night Long – Blow Up Your Video: Heatseeker (★) / Nick of Time / That’s the Way I Wanna Rock ’n’ Roll – Others: Who Made Who (★) / For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) *Note: Songs marked with “★” can be seen on the video section (DISC 3). AC/DC returned to the top of the scene with the massive success of their next album, THE RAZORS EDGE, and entered their second golden age. The “BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO Tour” was a prelude to that glory. This 3-disc set allows you to experience a tour that was not possible in Japan, with superb recordings by a master taper and authentic video. A new masterpiece that lets you enjoy a full show with rare tracks such as “Nick of Time”.
