Description
On November 13, 2015, Keith Jarrett’s complete solo piano performance was held at the prestigious hall “Henri Le Boeuf” in Brussels. What cannot be overlooked when talking about Jarrett during this period is that, after 2014’s “Creation,” he further refined his improvisational performance. The technique of developing instantly generated melodies into long compositions, cultivated through his solo activities up until the previous year, is still alive and well here. Rather than playing pre-prepared songs, he composes music note by note, taking in the atmosphere of the place, the sound of the piano, and even his own physical sensations. The performance begins with short snippets, then freely morphs into bluesy vamps, meditative silences, and sharp contemporary phrases. What’s especially interesting are the moments when he doesn’t force himself to complete an idea, but suddenly breaks it off and moves on in a completely different direction. This can be said to be the core of Jarrett’s unique “generative music,” which also applies to his later solo concerts. 2015 was a major turning point in Jarrett’s musical career, as it was also after the Standards Trio effectively came to an end.
