Disc 1 Larry Carlton, who will celebrate his 70th birthday, 50th anniversary of his album debut, and 40th anniversary of the release of his album “Nighttime Wanderings” (which includes the classic song “Room 335”) in 2018, has recorded a professional performance at a jazz festival held in Spain on December 12, 2017. This album includes the upbeat and powerful “FRIDAY NIGHT SHUFFLE,” with its groovy bassline, and “OUI OUI SI,” which has an incredible presence that screams “This is a Larry Carlton song!” The total running time is 50 minutes. This release features professional footage from the February 2nd Tokyo performance of the 2015 Japan tour, marking the return of the legendary duo of two guitar heroes, Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather, using master footage originally intended for TV broadcast. The Tokyo performance consisted of two shows, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. While the setlist was more compact than in other cities, this release selects the best performances from both shows. The band members for this performance were young prodigies: Jeff Babko on keyboards, Larry’s son Travis Carlton on bass, and Keith Carlock on drums. The show began with a cover of Jeff Beck’s “The Pump,” a staple of Larry & Luke’s joint performances. They even included a phrase from Steely Dan’s “Josie” at the end. The second song was Miles Davis’s “Tutu,” which surprised the audience. According to Larry’s MC, it was Luke’s suggestion, highlighting the significance of their reunion. Furthermore, the encore included a Cream version of “Crossroad,” followed by Toto’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and a vocal number to conclude the show. Luke, showing respect for Larry, played more restrainedly than usual, but still occasionally unleashed explosive sounds using the whammy bar, to which Larry responded with unusually aggressive phrases, which was quite interesting.
