J.R. Monterose is a solitary tenor player known only to those in the know. Although he performed with Charles Mingus and Kenny Dorham in the 1950s, he was a genius hard bop tenor who never followed trends and continued to pursue his own music. This work is a valuable live recording made in Amsterdam in 1970 while staying in Europe. The performance, backed by an excellent European rhythm section, is an exquisite fusion of the heat of hard bop and the free atmosphere unique to European jazz. Standards, blues, and the rugged improvisation typical of Monterose are developed one after another, fully conveying his abilities.
