This is the definitive recording of Miles Davis’s May 17, 1975 performance at the Philadelphia jazz club “Just Jazz,” captured in a first-class audience recording that is vastly superior to any previously released recordings and is sure to shock fans. As stated on the website of Peter Losin, a world-renowned collector of Miles Davis and jazz recordings, Miles performed at “Just Jazz” for six consecutive days from May 12 to 17, playing two sets each day (9pm and 11pm). It is unclear whether the recording released this time is from the first or second show of the final day, the 17th. Even Peter Losin is unsure about this. For the Just Jazz performance, instead of Sonny Fortune, the saxophonist chosen was the young Sam Morrison, only 23 years old at the time, a renowned player whom Miles reportedly said, “I haven’t heard such fiery saxophone playing since Trane joined my band.” Sam Morrison, who impressed Miles Davis, subsequently accompanied him on tour to Bottom Line and Avery Fisher shows. Now, the superb recording released this time is a stunningly clear recording, remastered by an overseas Miles Davis enthusiast, with almost no hiss noise present due to the tape’s aging. After the band warms up, when Al Foster’s drums begin on Funk (Prelude Pt.1), you’ll be stunned by the sound quality, which surpasses all previously released versions.
