Disc 1: Original footage from the second day of Diana Krall’s 2019 Japan tour, the Tokyo performance (November 6th), recorded from the first floor seats of the venue with excellent visibility and stable audience camera footage. All of these are stable audience sources and are completely original, high-definition footage that can only be seen here. Although some parts are audio-only and no video is included, the clear footage shot from close range is well worth watching. And of course, the audio uses the high-quality source from the main CD, with full matrixing for parts not included in the video. This Japan tour coincides with the release of the collaborative album “Wallflower,” which features numerous timeless pop songs with luxurious arrangements by David Foster. The setlist is fantastic, including pop classics and signature songs, as well as tracks from the album such as “California Dreamin’,” “If I Take You Home Tonight” written by Paul McCartney that year which caused a sensation, and Bob Dylan’s “Wallflower.” Moreover, the setlist and approach to the songs were varied each day, showing great ingenuity. On this final Tokyo performance, held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro, Diana’s throat was not in good condition, and she repeatedly mentioned it and apologized during the MC segments. Perhaps influenced by this, the performance was slightly shorter compared to the daily shows at Hitomi Memorial Hall, but she still delivered a solid rendition of her main songs, showcasing her unique interpretation of a wide range of musical worlds, from classic jazz to bossa nova, pop, and rock, including “Summer Samba,” “Love Is Deeper Than the Ocean,” “Temptation,” “California Dreamin’,” “The Wallflower,” “After You’ve Left,” and “Ophelia.” Also, since it was a Saturday, and perhaps taking advantage of the condition of her voice, she languidly sang Tom Waits’ “The Heart of Saturday Night” as an encore—a performance worth checking out.
