Jaco Pastorius and the Atlantean Driftwood Band – Jaco Pastorius / FL, USA 1982 (2 days)

Following his second solo album, “Word of Mouth,” released in 1981, Jaco Pastorius embarked on a full-fledged solo career. This release couples two live performances from his 1982 tour, both recorded from high-quality audience masters, featuring a big band. The two shows, from September 25th and October 2nd, were both in Florida. The latter, in particular, is a soundboard-level recording of his performance at the “Jazz on the Green” festival on Sanibel Island, Florida, where he led a 14-member jazz big band active in South Florida. Although both recordings are just over an hour long, they offer a different approach from “Word of Mouth,” featuring a varied set including album numbers, covers, and a medley of Jaco’s solos. The over 9-minute-plus “Liberty City” and the famous ballad “Sophisticated Lady” are especially worth listening to. This recording showcases his unique essence, with a vibrant energy that transcends the boundaries of jazz and a chaotic yet perfectly executed ensemble. While several recordings of his big band shows from that era exist, recordings featuring this particular lineup are rare and therefore an essential listening item as a valuable historical record.
