By the mid-1970s, pianist Cedar Walton had achieved a richer, more expressive style while upholding the hard-bop tradition. This album captures a superb live performance by his “golden era” quartet, recorded on July 18, 1975, at the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway. He is joined by the masterful tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan; as a key member of Walton’s quartet at the time, Jordan engages in seamless, inspired interplay with the leader. Walton’s refined, lyrical piano, Jordan’s warm and powerful tenor, and the rhythm section’s rock-solid swing combine to vividly showcase the true essence of 1970s straight-ahead jazz.
