Description
A recording originally released over two decades ago—which had previously disappointed enthusiasts due to poor sound quality, frequent skips, and an exorbitant price tag—has finally arrived in a definitive two-disc edition. This version features a 24-bit digital remaster created by an overseas collector, offering noise-free audio, pitch correction, and expanded dynamic range; the result is a miraculous sound experience that leaves fans marveling, “Is this really an audience recording from half a century ago?” In 1970, Miles was busy recording in a New York studio from January through March 3rd, followed by appearances at the Fillmore East in New York on March 6th and 7th. He continued to alternate between studio work and performances at the Fillmore East and West, played a concert in Central Park on July 7th, and—on July 18th—made a brief seven-minute appearance on *The Dick Cavett Show* (broadcast on July 22nd), showing a vibrant Miles to the entire nation. In August, he traveled to the UK and captivated fans with a legendary 38-minute set at the Isle of Wight Festival. Upon returning to the US late in the year, he maintained a hectic schedule, performing at the Electric Factory club in Philadelphia on November 17th and subsequently at the Cellar Door in Washington, D.C. However, research has since revealed that Miles performed several other concerts between November and December. The recording released here captures a show in Petersburg, New Jersey, from December; previous versions suffered from severe degradation over time, including grating hiss and fatal flaws like dropouts during the track “Honky Tonk.” Now, however, a renowned overseas collector—known for remastering numerous Miles Davis recordings—has successfully digitally cleaned the source tape, reviving the audio to a state where noise is virtually imperceptible. While Yasuki Nakayama identifies the third track on Disc 1 as “What I Say,” the world-renowned Miles scholar Peter Losin has named it “Untitled Original 701004,” and another Miles scholar, Enrico Merlin, has designated it “Untitled #4.” Listening closely to the high-quality audio of this recording reveals that it is indeed a different composition from “What I Say.” Regarding the performance venue, Losin has expressed uncertainty; he suggests that rather than Petersburg, the recording could potentially be from the November 14 concert at Alexander Hall (Princeton University), the November 21 concert at Crouse Auditorium (Syracuse University), or the November 25 performance at the Brookhaven Gym (Suffolk Community College). The radical, daring playing of the backing musicians—led by Keith Jarrett—spurred on by Miles’s own electrifying performance, arguably represents the true essence of these 1970 live shows.
