Deep Purple Yngwie Malmsteen / Tokyo, Japan 2009 2 Days IEM Matrix Edition

This release couples two live performances from John Lord’s 2009 Japan tour, his final visit to Japan and featuring a collaboration with Yngwie Malmsteen, specifically the April 8th and 15th shows at the Tokyo International Forum. The recordings utilize both intercepted audio from in-ear monitors and a high-quality audience master. The audience source is matrixed with the master audio from Ian Gillan’s IEMs, intercepted at the venue on the day of the performance, preserving the live atmosphere while maintaining a balanced and harmonious band sound, resulting in a perfect reproduction of both nights. The April 8th performance was the first day of the tour, and while Don Airey’s Hammond organ malfunctioned just before the show started, the use of synthesizers as the main instrument creates a slightly different sound than usual, which is definitely worth checking out. The main event was the final day of the tour on the 15th, when John Lord, who wasn’t with the band that night, suddenly appeared for “Perfect Strangers” and shared keyboards with Don Airey. Following “Space Truckin'”, Yngwie Malmsteen, who had opened for the band that day, took the stage and thrilled the audience with a solo battle with Steve Morse. For “Smoke on the Water,” John reappeared alongside Yngwie, making it a truly special night. Incidentally, this was John’s last performance on a Japanese stage before his death in 2012, making it a deeply moving and must-have memorial item for fans, available only during this Japan tour.
