They started their world tour with the release of “PERFECT STRANGERS” as a signal of their comeback, but the main part of that tour was in 1985. 1984 consisted only of the inaugural Oceania tour. From this “Oceania” leg, not only this film but also the Adelaide performance, which was officially made available in the aforementioned official videos “PERFECT STRANGERS LIVE” and “THE BOOTLEG SERIES,” were preserved. This film was shot on the third day of the official “PERFECT STRANGERS LIVE” tour, following the first day and the second day which featured a guest appearance by George Harrison. This film, which perfectly captures the show, offers stunningly beautiful and breathtaking visuals. The camera is positioned diagonally to the right of the stage (Ritchie Blackmore’s side), directly viewing the stage from the balcony seats where there are no front-row audience members. Moreover, the viewpoint is perfectly positioned. At almost the same height as the band members on stage, the arena audience is completely out of frame. Rather than feeling like you’re watching a live concert, you get the feeling of having the whole experience to yourself, as if you were directing a full rehearsal. Furthermore, the master’s freshness is exceptional. Although detailed generation information is not available, the image is vibrant in every detail, showing no signs of dubbing or age-related deterioration. The set includes some great tracks unique to that era, such as “Nobody’s Home,” “A Gypsy’s Kiss,” and “Under The Gun,” which are also familiar from “PERFECT STRANGERS LIVE,” so I’ll omit further details, but the performance itself is the ideal form of the reformed Deep Purple. As mentioned above, this recording was made at the 11th show of the tour, so the engine was fully warmed up and they were going full throttle from the start. Moreover, it was the third show at the same venue, and the next day was a day off. The fact that they weren’t tired from traveling and didn’t have to worry about the next day is wonderful. They are still brimming with the freshness of their comeback, and the determination to prove the meaning of their return overflows from the screen and speakers like a rainbow.
