Description

A powerful live recording has arrived, featuring a newly unearthed radio broadcast of a club performance held on July 3, 1975, prior to the recording of Billy Harper’s masterpiece “Black Saint,” which also served as an album unveiling. This recording is presented in noiseless 24-bit remastered audio. Recorded over two days, July 21st and 22nd, 1975, at Berkeley Studios in Paris, his second album “Black Saint” is considered a masterpiece among jazz and tenor saxophone enthusiasts, and was frequently played in jazz cafes at the time. This newly released recording is from a live performance before the album recording, and naturally, the members’ enthusiasm is off the charts. Two tracks from “Black Saint” and one from his debut leader album released in 1973 are performed. While a 35-minute live recording from the same year, July 24th, at Antibes Jazz, has also been released, the performance on this release is undeniably superior. Known for his collaborations with Pharoah Sanders and others, pianist Joe Bonner delivers a sophisticated and cool solo that you won’t find in studio recordings.
