Description
Their 2009 London performance quietly reflects their mature relationship. The piano resonates not so much to present a melody, but rather to pose a question to the space. The bass traces the outline of that question, and the drums breathe life into the music, subtly fluctuating the flow of time. Here, the melodies of standards are merely raw materials. In the hands of these three, well-known themes transform moment by moment, sometimes leading to profound lyricism, sometimes to a sharp interplay of rhythms. Within the transparent soundscape characteristic of ECM, the music never rushes. The next note waits until the resonance of the previous phrase has completely faded. The music of this night is less improvisation and more a quiet story born from years of dialogue. The audio source uses a precious audience master recording made by a fan.
