Description

This 1 hour and 48 minute recording captures Miles Davis’s performance at the annual New Orleans Jazz Festival on April 25, 1986, during his North American tour. The FM broadcast soundboard recording has been newly remastered in 2026. Although the original broadcast source was of good quality, there were some instances of hiss noise and inconsistencies in the sound. These have been corrected and the sound pressure adjusted using the latest equipment, and the final track, “RUBBERBAND,” which was cut from the broadcast, has been added from a different master, resulting in the first complete recording. Furthermore, among live recordings from the mid-80s, this period featuring a nine-piece lineup with Felton Cruz, the predecessor to Darryl Jones on bass, is rare, making it highly valuable. In terms of performance, Vince Wilburn’s light rhythm has a hip-hop feel and a somewhat modern quality, and the ensemble’s brilliance here suggests that Miles Davis, who was undervalued at the time, will be re-evaluated in the future. Miles himself was in excellent condition, and every note on his trumpet was full of power, with a superb, straightforward soar. The performance mainly featured numbers from the Grammy Award-winning album “Tutu,” and while the rhythm was light, the two-man duo of Miles and Bob Berg played with great energy, making it pleasant to listen to from start to finish. Bob, in particular, was full of energy on both tenor and soprano saxophone, and the interplay between him and Miles, who interspersed sharp phrases with his, was exquisite. The tone he created here had a jazz flavor that showed the influence of legends of yesteryear, and that was the difference between him and Kenny, who would later join Miles’ band. In summary, although the band was in a transitional period, Miles himself maintained his excellent form, and here is a superb performance from a 1986 live show where he hit sharp notes left and right.
