Description
This highly sought-after album captures a live performance in Bonn, Germany, from their 2010 European tour—a miraculous encounter by four masters who pioneered the forefront of jazz fusion/progressive, collectively known as “HoBoLeMa”—and features an audience recording from the best possible vantage point. First and foremost, Allan Holdsworth’s guitar is noteworthy. His unique legato technique and boundless sense of harmony continue to evolve throughout the night, resonating as a sonic sculpture far beyond mere “technique.” Tony Levin’s stick/bass intertwines with it, flexibly supporting the polyrhythmic space while occasionally leaping to the forefront melodically. At the heart of this lineup are the twin drums of Terry Bozzio and Pat Mastelotto. Meticulously constructed polyrhythms intertwine with improvisational exchanges, giving the music an unpredictable driving force. In particular, the colorful percussion emanating from Bozzio’s set transcends the boundaries of “percussion” and should be called orchestration.
