Description

In the mid-1980s, a club performance emerged that vividly conveyed another side of Metheny, who was in the midst of a creative transformation. The 1986 trio performance at the prestigious Ryles Jazz Club near Boston is an extremely valuable record of a highly experimental improvisational space that took place between large-scale projects. During this period, Metheny was actively pursuing smaller ensembles that sought a purer form of interplay, in parallel with the grand soundscapes created by his groups. In particular, in the trio setting, the harmonic structure of the guitar, the floating quality of the harmonies, and the plasticity of the rhythm are laid bare, and the “dialogue” of sound itself takes center stage, with the intimate space of the club further amplifying the tension and intimacy, allowing listeners to experience a truly immersive soundscape. This recording, featuring a collaboration with Vitous—a collaboration with which recordings are limited in Metheny’s career—and an intimate club setting, combines these two conditions to illuminate the creative peak of Metheny in the 80s from a different angle, making it an essential live recording for collectors.
