Description
With only two solo performances scheduled in Japan in 2026, in Tokyo and Osaka, this release couples the first show, the March 23rd performance at NHK Hall in Tokyo, with the best quality audio and video. The CD is recorded from a digital audience master using the latest equipment, recreating the entire 1 hour and 40 minute live performance with stable and powerful sound. The clapping that erupts during certain songs is particularly realistic, and it seems to ebb and flow along with the excitement of each song. The DVD, on the other hand, is a full recording of the audience footage taken with a digital camera from the front row of the arena. Although some zooming is used, it’s not necessary because you can always see Todd up close. And while one might expect a similar setlist for this Japanese performance, which came almost exactly one year after the previous year, it starts abruptly with “Everybody” from 2015, and continues with many core selections such as songs from “A Cappella” and numbers from his solo albums from the 80s and 90s onwards. Of course, the setlist included a Motown medley from the 70s album “The Wizard Is a True Star,” songs from “Faithful,” and of course, “I Saw the Light” and “Can We Still Be Friends,” ending with “Hello It’s Me,” a set that truly summarized his career of over half a century. In addition, there was a cover of Cole’s “The Walls Came Down,” which he hadn’t done in a long time, and the participation of his longtime friend Kasim Sulton from Utopia, making it an absolutely blissful first night performance, which has now been completely recreated in sound and video as a limited-edition memorial item for his visit to Japan.
