What is this!? From the newly unearthed soundboard series by engineer “Roy,” who has been releasing shocking works one after another, comes a shocking recording on a completely different level. This super-rare 2CD set is being released urgently, and collectors all over the world are buzzing with excitement at this very moment!! Permanently preserved in this work is a rehearsal album taken in Los Angeles on May 21, 1983. It is a stereo soundboard recording of the final rehearsal for the “US Festival,” whose existence was previously unknown. Speaking of rehearsals from the “DIVER DOWN” era, “REHEARSALS 1983 SOUNDBOARD” for the South American tour is still fresh in our memories, but that was a studio session with few completed songs. In contrast, this work is a full set just like a real concert, with a small audience, and Dave’s MC and the show’s structure are just like a concert. Despite this, its existence has been unknown to anyone until today… it is truly an ultra-rare hidden treasure. What was the timing of this hidden location? First, let’s take an overview of their activities at the time and then explore the position of this work in relation to the newly unearthed soundboard series released so far. 1982 “HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour” – July 14th – August 21st: North America #1 (26 shows) ← *8 works – September 1st – 25th: North America #2 (17 shows) ← *4 works – October 7th – December 11th: North America #3 (38 shows) ← *3 works 1983 “NO PROBLEM Tour” – Date unknown “REHEARSALS 1983 SOUNDBOARD” – January 14th – February 12th: South America (15 shows) ← *4 works * May 21st: LA rehearsal ← ★This work★ – May 29th: US festival appearance A rehearsal just before a legendary event whose existence was unknown. This is VAN HALEN during the “DIVER DOWN” era. After completing the regular “HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour” accompanying the album and their only-ever South American tour, the “NO PROBLEM Tour,” the final event was their appearance at the historic “US Festival.” Drawing 670,000 people, they brought the name, sound, and visuals of heavy metal—which had previously been nothing more than “music with the strange name of heavy metal”—to living rooms across America through television broadcasts. Van Halen were the grand finale act on “Heavy Metal Day,” truly rewriting music history. This album was recorded just eight days before that historic festival. According to Van Halen scholar Greg Lennoff, the band rehearsed for several weeks. Initially starting at their usual Zoetrope Studios, they moved to A&M Studios midway through, and this album was recorded at the A&M Soundstage. Roy’s tape simply says “Rehearsal US Fest,” but Dave’s MC reveals it’s a secret recording session, saying it’s the “final rehearsal for next weekend’s festival.” The atmosphere is completely different from usual, just a rehearsal. This recording, which details that scene, is, as always, a superb stereo soundboard recording directly from the mixing console by engineer “Roy.” Because it’s not a large venue, it’s even easier to listen to than usual. However, what’s different is the atmosphere of the show, which is full of the mood of a private, secret gig. The nuances of the performance are different, but the biggest difference is Dave. His comedic skills are on full display in this recording, and he talks non-stop to the audience from the beginning. He tells them, with jokes, that it’s not a normal show, that the lighting is lame, and that they should just relax and enjoy the jam. Furthermore, the MC after “Runnin’ With The Devil” is also different from usual. Normally, he teases the audience or shares local anecdotes, but in this album, he jokingly reveals how he ended up performing at “US Fest.” “US Fest” was funded by Steve Wozniak of Apple’s pocket money, and Dave makes fun of the organizers and says things that are very much in line with the times, like “I don’t know anything about computers.” He even sings an impromptu song mocking Wozniak. This is a rehearsal album that captures the stage performance leading up to the legendary festival, but the stage itself is just like the real thing… no, it is the real thing. He delivers almost the same set as he would at “US Fest” eight days later. Let’s take a look at the contents here. Diver Down (7 songs) – The Full Bug / Little Guitars / Dancing In The Street (★) / Cathedral / Secrets / Intruder / (Oh) Pretty Woman Others (4 songs + 5 songs) – The Fuse of Fire: Runnin’ With the Devil / Jamie’s Cryin’ / Ice Cream Man / You Really Got Me (Happy Trails) – Others: Romeo Delight / Unchained / So This Is Love? (★) / Somebody Get Me A Doctor / Everybody Wants Some!! / Dave’s Wozniak Song (★★) *Note: “★” indicates songs not included in previous newly discovered soundboard series. “★★” in particular indicates songs not even performed at the “US Festival”. …and so on. “Dancing In The Street” and “So This Is Love?” have never appeared in the vast new soundboard series so far, but “Dancing In The Street” in particular is an extremely rare song that was only performed five times in Van Halen’s entire history. And then there’s “Dave’s Wozniak Song,” the aforementioned song mocking Wozniak, and as it was improvised, it’s a one-of-a-kind track that can only be heard here. Each of the “Roy” soundboard series has been shocking, but this release is an unprecedentedly impactful album. It’s a live recording whose existence was previously unknown, and above all, an unknown recording directly connected to the legendary “US Festival,” an event that changed music history. It pours the live performance leading up to that legendary stage into your brain in superb soundboard quality. Moreover, it’s not just a rehearsal recording. It includes songs that haven’t been heard in previous series, extremely rare songs that have only been performed a handful of times in the band’s entire history, MCs and improvised songs that only existed on this day, and much more. An absolutely incredible live album packed with highlights. A stereo soundboard recording of a public rehearsal for the “US Festival” held in Los Angeles on May 21, 1983. This is an ultra-rare stage performance that was previously unknown, a final rehearsal held in a full concert format with an audience. This is the latest installment in the newly unearthed soundboard series recorded by engineer “Roy,” and it’s an absolute must-have, featuring Dave’s hilarious talk and extremely rare tracks.
