Description

Flora Purim was a Brazilian jazz vocalist who primarily participated in albums by many artists, including Return to Forever, during the 70s and 80s. She was also known as the wife of percussionist Airto Moreira. This recording captures a concert she fronted at Island Federal Prison in San Pedro, Los Angeles, on March 3, 1976, using a soundboard recording from a radio broadcast master. Purim herself was imprisoned there at the time for cocaine possession, and while serving her sentence, she invited the teacher-student duo of Cannonball Adderley and George Duke, the impenetrable rhythm section of Mirosolaf Vitous and Leon Chancler, and of course Airto Moreira to hold this concert. This title is the radio broadcast of that concert by local jazz station KBCA FM. The live performance, which took place with almost no rehearsal, included Chick Corea’s “Light as a Feather” and “500 Miles High,” as well as Airto explaining and demonstrating percussion instruments. Incidentally, this was reportedly the first time such interaction had taken place between civilians and inmates in America. The 78-minute program captures this unusual concert and concludes with an interview with Purim. Recorded at Terminal Island Federal Prison, San Pedro, CA, USA March 3rd 1976 : Soundboard Recording 1.
