Description

This release features a nearly complete recording of the November 14th concert in Cupertino, California, from the US tour following the release of “SPEAKING OF NOW” in 2002. The high-quality audience master has been digitally remastered in 2026, resulting in a nearly full 2-hour and 35-minute recording. The original master was already of very high quality, but the remastering process has been further refined by cutting long gaps between songs and correcting areas where the sound was unnaturally strong, making the entire performance much smoother. This year also saw a Japanese tour featuring what was touted as the strongest lineup at the time, and while official footage from that tour, “SPEAKING OF NOW LIVE,” exists, tracks like “Bright Size Life” and “Minuano (Six-Eight)” from “STILL LIFE (TALKING)” can only be heard here, making it a must-see for fans. Moreover, “Bright Size Life,” while featuring a six-piece lineup just like in the Japanese performance, showcased a phenomenal performance by Metheny, his close friend Antonio Sanchez, and the masterful Richard Bona as a trio. Bona, who played percussion and guitar on other tracks, picked up the bass and spun out phrases that had earned him the nickname “the second coming of Jaco Pastorius,” while Sanchez responded with fills. What initially seemed like chaotic playing came together as a cohesive ensemble, and as the energy reached its peak, Metheny delivered a passionate solo. “Minuano (Six-Eight)” also created a dreamy mood with its light ensemble and multi-layered chorus. Other highlights included “Into The Dream/Are You Going With Me?”, which featured a long, enchanting intro with the Picasso guitar’s ethereal sound, and the hard-edged “The Roots Of Coincidence.” This extended live performance, which relived the excitement of the Japanese show, is a must-listen for fans.
