Description

Among the series of Millard master recordings unearthed by JEMS, the final day of Paul & Wings’ performance at the LA Forum garnered significant attention, alongside Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Not only was it an audience recording with exceptional sound quality, but the timing of the live performance—from 1975 to 1977, during Millard’s peak—was also fortunate. This alone practically guaranteed a high-quality recording, but in fact, this particular recording of Millard’s performance is especially close to the original, even among his peak recordings. Joe English’s drumming, in particular, sounds incredibly lifelike. While Paul also did multi-track recording on this day, the realism of the sound and the ability to recreate the atmosphere of June 23, 1976, is so vivid that it makes you wonder if even multi-track recording could match it. Due to its high sound quality, many items were produced, starting with the nostalgic Dynamite Studios album “WINGS OVER AMERICA II,” but these all suffer from increased hiss noise due to generation dropouts and pitch inaccuracies, and none of them can be called the definitive version. In that sense, JEMS’s discovery of the masters in 2020 (six years ago already!) was groundbreaking, as it cleared away all those older items. The masterpiece that contained these masters is “L.A. FORUM 1976 FINAL NIGHT: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES,” which has, of course, been sold out for a long time. And yet, as it is the most important sound source in the history of Paul & Wings audience recordings, a reissue was only natural. However, this time it is not just a simple re-release, but a re-examination of the sound source as it is being released on the Paul Specialist label. The parts that were missing in the previous release have also been thoroughly filled in. These are parts that are not related to the performance, but first of all, the cuts after “Lady Madonna,” “You Gave Me The Answer,” and “Hi, Hi, Hi” have been filled in from the stereo source of the classic album “WINGS FROM WINGS” LP box set. And that’s not all. The cassette-change cuts that occurred after “Beware My Love” and “Band On The Run” were filled in using mono audience recordings that had been floating around on the internet for a long time (lol). This allowed for the longest version of the performance that wasn’t possible on the previous release. The left channel drop issue in “Magneto And Titanium Man” was also addressed by readjusting the processing to mitigate the discomfort, making it easier to listen to than the previous version. Of course, these fill-in-the-blanks are important, but with a Millard recording that captured the final day of Wings’ peak Over America in its ultimate form, it’s only natural to want to hear it in its complete form. After all, it was the final day of the tour that marked the pinnacle of Wings. It’s truly fortunate that Millard, at the peak of his recording career, recorded that burning, magnificent performance. It’s unavoidable, but the official release had to be processed for commercial purposes, such as “editing multiple performances” and “re-recording backing vocals.” However, Millard has captured the performance on the final day of the tour and the fervor at the LA Forum exactly as it was, and with the highest possible sound quality. This historic Millard recording audience album is a must-have for any household, even those who aren’t Paul McCartney fanatics. It’s a version that lets you enjoy a truly legendary day uncut from beginning to end! (Remaster Notes) Remastered from the superb Millard master of the famous June 23, 1976 performance.
