Description
In 2020, Fred Hersch demonstrated his continued vitality with the release of his moving solo album “Songs From Home,” recorded at home during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. This newly released album is a special live performance streamed online, recorded without an audience at the Village Vanguard, a venue in New York City considered a “jazz mecca.” Like the album, this live performance features cover songs, including Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman,” Joni Mitchell’s “All I Want,” and “‘Round Midnight,” which is not included on the album, making it a must-listen. In a space dominated by silence and tension, each note breathes, and even silence transforms into music. The delicate touch, the depth of the harmonies, the beauty of the improvisational structure… Hersch’s intelligence and poetic sensibility are honed to the extreme in this performance. Coupled with the historical context of the pandemic, the expression is introspective yet never closed off. Both the covers and originals slowly draw the listener in, making this another album in the lineage of classic Vanguard recordings.
