Description

This release includes not only FM audio recordings from The Who’s 1989 tour, but also some of the best, forgotten professional footage. While the ’89 tour had often been criticized for being all about money and Pete’s inability to play electric guitar, the “TOMMY” re-enactment show held at the Universal Amphitheater in LA in August was the catalyst for a sudden shift to critical acclaim. Unlike the regular ’89 concert, the first half featured a special setlist recreating the album, complete with a stellar cast. Naturally, this special show was recorded and broadcast via the then-popular pay-per-view format. It was subsequently released on various DVDs as “FEATURING THE ROCK OPERA TOMMY,” further reaffirming the appeal of the ’89 tour. With the advent of the DVD era, it was combined with the 1996 live footage to create the luxurious “TOMMY AND QUADROPHENIA LIVE” release. Thankfully, a fan of the ’89 tour has extracted the “Tommy” live performance from the same software and uploaded it to YouTube. Naturally, the picture and sound quality are of official quality, so they’re impeccable. Compared to the digital restorations available today, VHS footage from ’89 is much more faithful to the original quality and easier to watch. Even more than that, the live performance itself is simply amazing. Since it’s a “Tommy” live performance, Pete’s acoustic guitar formation works perfectly, and for the first time in Who live history, “Tommy” recreates the acoustic atmosphere of the album, which is truly captivating. The presence of guest appearances by Steve Winwood, Billy Idol, and Patti Lavelle is also a highlight, but Elton John, who sings “Pinball Wizard” just as he did in the film, is truly impressive. The highlight is Phil Collins, the same drummer who played Uncle Ernie instead of Keith Moon, whose character is so entertaining that it seems like he could steal the show. On the other hand, after the “TOMMY” part, which featured a different setlist and guest appearances, Pete seemed to be released from his tension and was in a very high-spirited mood as the second part of the set began. It’s interesting to see how much excitement Pete had. The band members were still in their mid-40s at the time, and looking back, they still look young. Roger, who is always light on his feet, is exceptional, but Pete, who jumps repeatedly with high energy as mentioned above, is also very flexible. John also plays a unique bass line. It’s also clear that Simon Phillips’ drumming, who supported them, was a perfect match. This is the best professional shot video that truly captures the charm of the 1989 tour!
