Paul McCartney’s 1972 Wings debut surprise gig is now available on a newly discovered master! In 1972, Paul McCartney reunited with his band Wings, marking his first live debut since the breakup of The Beatles. This memorable first live performance debuted on a newly discovered master recording! On February 9, 1972, McCartney performed an unannounced surprise gig at the University of Nottingham. This was the precursor to the bus tours that followed, which toured universities across the UK. The setlist for this live debut, which was still relatively thin on the band’s repertoire, included tracks from the album “Wild Life,” two performances of the soon-to-be-released “Peace for Ireland,” a blues number featuring newly-joined Henry McCulloch, and previously unreleased tracks like “My Love,” “The Mess,” and “Thank You, Darling,” as well as killer Beatles rock ‘n’ roll covers of “Lucille” and “Long Tall Sally.” This is a truly rare and unearthed live recording that vividly captures Paul’s ambitious performance, marking his return to live performances despite being rough around the edges. Until now, only degraded audio recordings of this performance have been available, but this latest release is a direct copy of the audience-recorded reel tape, resulting in a major upgrade in exceptionally fresh master quality. The recording time is also longer than previous releases. While the original recordings had noise and dropouts on several tracks, careful restoration has completely restored them to perfection. Following the main live performance, additional recordings are also included from a tour rehearsal held in London a few days earlier. Highlights from the rehearsal are captured on soundboard audio.
