Description
Oakland, a once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece audience produced from the 1977 Animals Tour. Just mentioning the name of the place is enough to tell Floyd enthusiasts when it was a live performance. The final version of the masterpiece audience, which has been released many times, was “ULTIMATE OAKLAND” released in 2021. When I think about it, I was really lucky that a taper named Reinhard Holwein, who recorded the Grateful Dead’s live performance near San Francisco, went to a Pink Floyd concert on May 9, 1977. Speaking of Dead’s tapers, they are veteran warriors in concert recording. It is nothing short of a miracle that a taper like him, who is literally “skilled in audience recording,” went to the 1977 Floyd, who cares about the acoustics at stadium live performances just like the Dead, and especially to the first day of the Oakland Coliseum. Thanks to him, the result was a super high-quality audience recording that even Mike Millard would be jealous of. The recording know-how that Hallwin accumulated at Dead concerts and Floyd’s sound system, which sounds from multiple directions in the stadium, are a perfect match. The sound image is so close that it’s almost like a soundboard, and even the rich sound spread that would have reverberated in the venue on the day is vividly captured. This was another miraculous recording. “ULTIMATE OAKLAND” is a rare masterpiece that has been polished to the ultimate form. It was an undisputed definitive version that “GRAF ZEPPELIN” brilliantly proved that Oakland, which seemed to have reached the ultimate with the release of “DEFINITIVE OAKLAND” in 2017, still had room for improvement. In particular, the encore “Careful With That Axe, Eugene”, the highlight of the day, was the adjustment of the pitch deviation that all the previous releases had overlooked, which is what “GRAF ZEPPELIN” is known for. The final definitive version “ULTIMATE OAKLAND” has also sold out, and the stable supply of the eternal masterpiece Oakland has been cut off, which is a serious situation. It is natural that requests for reissues are received for such a classic, and even if they were not, a re-release is urgently needed. So for this re-release, “GRAF ZEPPELIN” has made some slight adjustments. However, the thorough phase correction of the previous release was literally at an ultimate level, so this time it was limited to minor adjustments. Instead, the title and artwork have been completely renewed. The previous work “ULTIMATE OAKLAND” was designed like a sister version of “DEFINITIVE OAKLAND”, but this jacket is a homage to the nostalgic Great Dane album “IN THE FLESH”. Unlike the stubborn Mike Millard (bitter smile), Dead Taper Hole Winn, who is proactive in trading, has been spreading the original sound source since the beginning, and as a result, this GDR version also boasts the highest level of sound quality at the time, and there were many enthusiasts who were blown away by his recordings and Floyd’s great performances. On the other hand, the title is also a homage to the nostalgic HIGHLAND version. While the GDR version was a high-quality Oakland from the cassette trade era, the HIGHLAND version benefited from the DAT trade era and was the first release based on the 1st Gen Reel. Speaking of Oakland, there are countless enthusiasts who have been helped by the same title. A package that combines two nostalgic titles like this should make any enthusiast smile. In this way, “Taper, who always recorded only dead, went to a Floyd concert, and as a result, a record of the Animals tour that will blow your mind was left behind” Oakland. Furthermore, Floyd himself performed one of the best performances on the tour, and finally performed “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” on this day only, and the miracle that captured that scene with perfect sound quality was accumulated in Oakland. The best version that brought out the charm of such a rare famous sound source to the utmost has returned with artwork and titles that will make any enthusiast cry! As with the previous release, it has been digitized from the master tape. Since the mastering has been done to the last release, some EQ correction has been made to the previous master. In addition, some parts of the applause between songs that were dry have been slightly improved. Live at Alameda Coliseum, Oakland, CA, USA 9th May 1977 ULTIMATE SOUND UPGRADE Disc 1 (51:53) 1.
