Description

Mike Millard’s “The Roxy” recording series, with its legendary club’s closed-door sound and dense master rush, is too special. The “SCRATCH Tour” edition of Peter Gabriel, which serves as a diagnosis at that time, is introduced. This work is recorded on the “October 1, 1978 The Roxy performance (early show)”. It is a superb audience recording. As you may know if you have noticed this article, Millard’s recordings bearing the “ROXY” label are diverse, especially regarding Peter Gabriel. In fact, GENESIS-related bands performed warm-up gigs at “The Roxy”, and Millard, a big fan of GENESIS, frequently went there and recorded. It is a huge collection that cannot be introduced here, but let’s at least organize the Gabriel stuff, which is easy to get confused. 1977 “CAR Tour” *April 9 “THE ROXY 1977 1ST NIGHT (EARLY SHOW)” *April 9 “THE ROXY 1977 1ST NIGHT (LATE SHOW)” ・April 10: Early show *April 10 “THE ROXY 1977 2ND NIGHT (Late)” 1978 “SCRATCH Tour” *September 30 “THE ROXY 1978 1ST NIGHT (EARLY SHOW)” *September 30 “ROXY 1978 1ST NIGHT (Late)” *October 1: Early show ←★This work★ *October 1 “ROXY 1978 2ND NIGHT LATE SHOW” The above seven works. At “The Roxy”, live performances were held at a pace of “2 times a day for 2 days”, and Millard recorded them all one by one. The original masters have been excavated one by one, and this time it is “SCRATCH Tour / Day 2 / Early Show”. If you have experienced even one of the above, you will know that the “The Roxy” series is also special in terms of sound. The performance and vocals are intense, completely dominating the craze swirling in the small club. Millard has secured a position so close that he can almost touch the stage, combining the atmospheric vibe with the closeness of Gabriel being right in front of him. “Millard’s Garden” is famous for “The Forum” and “Long Beach Arena”, but this closed room nuance is never possible in such a large venue. There is a lot of audience noise compared to other Millard works, but it is a magical scene where it is felt as a virtue rather than a drawback. Such a close-up and scorching sound depicts a full show that is more colorful than the sister work. As mentioned above, four stages were performed in only two days, but Gabriel changed the set in detail. Here, let’s compare it with the other three works from 1978 and categorize it into “fixed songs” and “replacement songs.” Fixed songs (12 songs) ・CAR: Moribund The Burgermeister/Slowburn/Solsbury Hill/Modern Love ・SCRATCH: On The Air/Perspective/D.I.Y./Mother Of Violence/Flotsam And Jetsam ・Other: On Presuming To Be Modern/I Don’t Remember/The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Replacement songs (6 songs) ・CAR: Waiting For The Big One/Here Comes The Flood ・SCRATCH: Indigo/White Shadow ・Other: Me And My Teddy Bear/Song Without Words (★: original song of Not One Of Us) *Note: “★” marks songs that were not performed on any of the other three 1978 albums, “THE ROXY 1978 1ST NIGHT (EARLY SHOW)”, “ROXY 1978 1ST NIGHT (Late)” and “ROXY 1978 2ND NIGHT LATE SHOW”. … and so on. It seems that Gabriel is also conscious of two performances a day, and all six of the “replacement songs” were removed from “ROXY 1978 2ND NIGHT LATE SHOW”. Although it is quite close to the first “THE ROXY 1978 1ST NIGHT (EARLY SHOW)” the day before, “Song Without Words” is a number only for this show that was not played there. Also, that “Song Without Words” is an unfamiliar song title, but this is not a cover of someone, but an early version of “Not One Of Us” that will be included in the next work “MELT”. In fact, this stage on this day was also the world premiere of “Not One Of Us”. Mike Millard, an absolute master who is also a symbol of the audience recording culture. This is the latest in the “The Roxy” recording series, which is a special category in that collection. It may seem that there are a lot of titles with similar names, but each one has a rich and special feeling. And if you experience even one, you will want more! This is the best audience recording of the magic of “The Roxy” “West Hollywood performance (early show) on October 1, 1978”. This is the latest in the special “The Roxy” recording series of the Millerd Collection, and the performance and vocals that completely dominate the craze in the small club are intense. “Song Without Words (the original song of Not One Of Us)”, which cannot be heard on other “The Roxy” recordings, is also a delicious new masterpiece.
