This work was recorded at “Charlotte performance on July 17, 1982”. This is the third live performance of “Hide Your Sheep Tour 1982-1983”. Let’s be honest. At first, when I received the master, I thought to myself, “It’s not well-known, it’s not that popular. It’s probably going to be a blast anyway…” as I played it. However, the sound that comes out of the speakers is quite a cool audience sound. There is no explosion, no sound cracking, and a good balance between cheers and musical sounds. It is very easy to listen to, and I wonder why so many recordings have remained at the level of “those in the know”. And it is interesting that the content is the very early stage of the third day of the tour. While the performance is full of enthusiasm at the start, it also tickles my heart that there is a subtle sense of fumbling. Of course, it’s impossible for the battle-hardened VAN HALEN to perform nervously and stiffly…but the set list was not set in stone, and the order of the songs was different from what came after, and “Jamie’s Cryin'” was impossible. “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” is also included, and you can see the traces of trial and error. Speaking of “Hide Your Sheep Tour 1982-1983”, it is a time when the band changed to top gear even if you look at their entire career, and it is a time when the band’s momentum was transformed into sophistication. Moreover, this work is the very beginning of the tour. It’s a time when you’re in a good position and everything you do is going well, but every day is also a challenge.
