They released their second album in September 1970, but before that they had performed many new songs live. On June 13, 1970, both the first and second shows at the Capitol Theater were recorded as complete soundboard recordings. This is the best sound quality recording of the 1970 live performance, and this time we have directly converted the sound source from the first generation tape of the master to a CDR. The band’s performance at Woodstock in 1969 and the subsequent Santana first album were highly praised. The success put pressure on the members, and the two, lead vocalist and organist Gregg Rolie and bandleader Carlos Santana, began to take different musical directions. Gregg, along with several other band members, continued to push forward with the hard rock that had been an important element since the band’s inception, while Santana began to seek jazz and fantasy rather than blues and rock. Carlos, who was fascinated by Gabor Szabo, Miles Davis, Pharoah Sanders, and John Coltrane, also became more interested in spiritual music. However, the difference in direction rather added color to the sound, creating an exquisite balance, and by including not only guitars and keyboards but also strong percussion, Santana’s unique music was developed as a result. This is also true in the live ensemble, and this CDR is a truly enjoyable one.
