Mike Oldfield/Netherlands 1984

This is a nearly complete recording of the Rotterdam concert on November 1st, Netherlands, from the world tour when the ninth album “DISCOVERY” was released in 1984. The album also features pop music, with Maggie Riley and Barry Palmer from TRIUMVIRAT. The tour also brought two vocalists, and the pop side was emphasized by using different vocalists for each song. However, the first half is a large-scale progressive song with a focus on instrumentals, and the second half features vocals, making it a two-part album. The album starts with a raging masterpiece, “Platinum”, followed by part 2 of “Tubular Bells”. After the “Taurus” medley, which is unique to the live performance, the highlight of this recording is a perfect reproduction of the masterpiece “The Lake”, which can be said to be the only progressive number on “DISCOVERY”. Mike’s guitar, which is full of originality and delicate touch, and the accurate band ensemble are also wonderful, making it a passionate performance unique to this tour. After “Five Miles Out,” the masterpiece “Crises” features a drum solo by Simon Phillips, although some parts are unfortunately cut. In the second half, he plays songs from the album “DISCOVERY,” including the melancholy pop singles “To France” and “Tricks Of The Light,” in which you can hear Maggie’s vocals. Of course, the big hit “Moonlight Shadow” drew huge cheers. This is a rare recording from the period when his diverse sides were in full bloom. Platinum 02. Tubular Bells Part II 03.
