The first release since The Who’s long-awaited tour resumed was “AUSTIN 2022,” which recorded the show in Austin, the fifth performance, but this time they are releasing the Oklahoma performance, which took place one week after Austin, the eighth performance! First of all, the sound quality is outstanding. This means that the quality is slightly better than “AUSTIN 2022,” and you’re sure to be overwhelmed by the power of the sound image alone. Of course, “AUSTIN 2022” also had great sound quality, but this time the audience is finally of superb quality. There’s no doubt that this release will attract attention from enthusiasts all over the world, and the interaction with the orchestra, which is the highlight of this tour, is captured very realistically. This was the sound that The Who aimed for in 2022. In addition to the wonderful sound quality, the performance content is even more impressive. In Austin, there were quite a few parts that could not be said to be full throttle, but a week later in Oklahoma, the engine was truly full throttle. In the first place, Pete was inciting the audience with high energy at the opening, and even that alone was a different level of energy from Austin. The performance of the “TOMMY” part that started from there was also very powerful, and the orchestra also fit in well. On the contrary, Pete is very cheerful and talkative not only in the opening but throughout the live performance, which is different from Austin. On the other hand, it can be said that Austin’s performance is a valuable record of a performance that still remains cautious. The finishing touch was “Relay”, which was not performed in Austin. Originally, in the middle of the live performance, the orchestra retreated and the band only played old classics on a daily basis, but this was the day that “Relay” was performed for the first time since the start of the tour. The performance was very high-tension, and it was wonderful that it could be said to be the old Who itself. Indeed, it is a number that could not be performed in the first half of the tour, but could be performed now because the engine is at full throttle. Just the tight and high-tension performance of this song alone shows how Roger and Pete are in top form, and how they have graduated from the groping state in the first half of the tour. Therefore, even though they almost get the lyrics wrong at the end of “Won’t Get Fooled Again” due to their momentum, Roger is good at cheating here (lol) as expected of a veteran singer. And the contrast between the quiet or smooth “TOMMY” part in the first half of the live and the bold “QUADROPHENIA” part in the second half is amazing. After all, Roger and Pete are at full throttle, and Zach Starkey’s drums, who supports them, show a trinity of excitement against them and the orchestra. I can’t help but be impressed that this tour by the two elderly people has finally reached such perfection, and the documentary power unique to the best audiences further conveys the fulfillment of the performance in a real way.
