Description
“WHO’S NEXT” is not only a career-high album for The Who, but also a defining album of 1970s rock. Now available in its finest quality! In 1995, MCA traced the analog master tapes back to the original and commissioned master engineer Kevin Gray to cut this limited-edition LP using an all-analog process. It boasts a stunning sound quality that easily surpasses the common belief that vinyl is warm! From delicate acoustic riffs to hard rock sounds, it’s so exquisite you’d mistake it for a remix. This CD release surpasses current remasters in quality! This release includes not only the finest sounding version of their first album, “MY GENERATION,” but also a meticulously crafted CD reissue of the rare, high-quality LP of The Who’s landmark album, “WHO’S NEXT.” Not only is it a masterpiece among The Who’s albums, but it’s also considered a defining album of 1970s rock, so many different versions of “WHO’S NEXT” exist. Of course, like the simultaneous release of “MY GENERATION,” “WHO’S NEXT” was also released on a limited-edition LP by Classic Records. However, among these items, an unexpected surprise was the LP released by MCA Records in 1995. 1995 was a time when analog releases were often overlooked amid the heyday of CDs. The MCA LP being released on CD this time was a project commissioned by master engineer Kevin Gray to create an all-analog LP from the master tapes. While the all-analog process has now been rediscovered as a standard method for reissues of albums from the 1960s and 1970s, MCA’s decision to release an LP using this process in 1995, a time when digital was king, was nothing short of visionary. Plus, the sound quality is simply superb. While this album may seem like a hard rock album due to the presence of synthesizer-infused masterpieces like “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” the album as a whole is in fact crafted with a highly delicate sound, featuring extensive use of acoustic guitar. A deluxe edition of this album was released a few years ago, and it’s still fresh in our memory. This latest remaster emphasizes the aforementioned hardness, and indeed its impact is impressive. However, it can also sound a little “intrusive.” The crystal-clear sound of the MCA recording is striking. It’s no longer “warm,” but rather the pure analog feel is on a completely different level from the current remaster. The difference is clear even in tracks typical of “WHO’S NEXT,” such as “Bargain” and “Love Ain’t For Keeping” on side A, which feature hard playing but acoustic guitar. The difference becomes even more pronounced on the album’s B-side, enough to give enthusiasts the illusion that the MCA recording uses a remixed master! Indeed, the delicacy of “Behind Blue Eyes” and the raw wildness of “Won’t Get Fooled Again” make the feel of the recent remasters completely different, and it’s no wonder they’re mistaken for a different mix. It’s truly astonishing that MCA was able to fully utilize this analog feel in LP production back in 1995. The result is the crystal-clear sound we’ve been talking about, but that also means there are many quiet sections, making the LP more susceptible to scratch noise. While this is a relatively recent pressing, it’s still 30 years old since its release. The complete elimination of scratch noise during playback, literally crystal clear from edge to edge, is on a different level than a simple CD-to-LP conversion. The MCA recording, a rare hidden gem from the ’90s, offers stunning sound quality and crystal-clear instrumentation. The shocking playback quality of this little-known LP has been conveniently and noiselessly reproduced on a perfect CD, allowing you to enjoy it from start to finish with complete peace of mind. (43:44) Side A 1. Baba O’Riley 2. Bargain 3. Love Ain’t For Keeping 4. My Wife 5. The Song Is Over Side B 6. Getting In Tune 7. Going Mobile 8. Behind Blue Eyes 9. This ultra-rare box set, limited to 20 sets worldwide, was created based on the mono master tape. As a result, sound quality was prioritized above all else, resulting in an insanely detailed four-disc set, including a test pressing, 12-inch 45 rpm, 200g heavyweight vinyl, single-sided pressing, and a total of four discs, despite the album being only about 40 minutes long! While it boasts the ultimate sound, it’s a test pressing of only 20 sets, making it a true Pandora’s box in that most people on the planet are unaware of its sound!
