Description
Unlike their later albums, The Who’s memorable debut album, “MY GENERATION,” was produced under a contract with the then-popular producer Shel Talmy. As a result, the master tapes were not in the hands of the Who, and despite their fame, a reissue never materialized. While the album is now officially released in both mono and stereo mixes, this only happened in the 21st century. Finally, when the master tapes were released from Talmy’s hands, the original mono mix was borrowed and released in 2005 by the renowned Classic Records, crafted using a thorough all-analog process. While this alone was enough to make it a rare item and a record of exceptional sound quality, the ultimate release of this release is a test pressing, 12-inch 45 rpm, 200g heavy vinyl, single-sided pressing, and four-disc set—literally, another dimension of ultimate format! Naturally, only 20 sets were produced, making this mega-rare version a sought-after bargain, commanding sky-high prices among collectors. It was the ultimate set, accessible only to 20 people worldwide. But even more importantly, the sound quality is unmatched among all “MY GENERATION” releases. This album was originally released as an LP with a running time of no more than 40 minutes. Tracing it back to the master tapes, and then pressing it into a four-disc set of 12-inch 45 rpm single-sided discs, combined with the high-quality pressings typical of Classic Records, it’s no wonder the sound quality is so good. In fact, it’s practically impossible to improve the sound quality any further. For the reasons mentioned above, this album saw extremely few re-releases until the 21st century, which ironically resulted in the master tapes remaining intact. Because this recording was made on a high-quality, experimental four-disc set of 12-inch 45 rpm single-sided discs, the sound quality practically leaps out from the discs, creating a truly exceptional sound. The difference is clear just by listening to the “Ja-la-n” intro to “The Kids Are Alright.” The current official mono remaster also seemed pretty good, but the sound of this test pressing is so different it’s no contest. It’s not just “natural,” but the difference in freshness and richness of the sound, even in the same mono, is so striking. It’s amazing how mono even feels spacious. The high-quality pressing from Classic Records is truly impressive, and the sound quality fully utilizes the master tape. It even easily surpasses the original release from Brunswick in 1965! In fact, if you acquire a poorly preserved copy of a 1960s original, it can often end up sounding outdated. This is all the more remarkable for Classic Records’ brilliant sound, fully utilizing the potential of the master tape, which is characteristic of its minimal degradation. While this is an extremely valuable and high-quality item, it’s not only difficult to obtain and expensive, but also insane to listen to a 40-minute album on four 12-inch 45 rpm discs. The pursuit of sound quality is a major priority, and there are undeniable inconveniences. However, with this release, you can enjoy this otherworldly sound quality on a single CD, which is incredibly convenient. And yet, the overwhelming sound quality remains intact. Of course, the scratch noise that occurs during recording from LP has been thoroughly removed, but the exceptional clarity and richness of this album have been completely preserved. Listen to this mega-rare, undeniably high-quality mono release of “MY GENERATION” with peace of mind, and immerse yourself in it! (36:13) Side A-1 1. Out In The Street 2. I Don’t Mind 3.
