Description
“SLIDE IT IN” is a miraculous masterpiece that evolved powerfully with the addition of Cozy Powell, while still retaining its rich blues-rock flavor. The demo album, which provided a detailed look into the behind-the-scenes story, has been upgraded. This latest edition features a more accurate 2025 transfer and mastering by Garf Zeppelin. This release permanently preserves three studio recordings related to the storied “SLIDE IT IN” masterpiece: five backing tracks and four vocal demo tracks, all from the “Cozy Tapes,” as well as the single “Eddie Kramer Mix” (two tracks). Let’s take a look at each one individually. Cozy Tape #1: Backing Tracks (5 tracks) The main focus of this album is the studio demos contained on two Cozy tapes. The first is the backing track before vocals were added. In fact, this section is the album’s greatest feature. It has been retransferred from the original Cozy Tapes, resulting in a significant upgrade. In fact, the recording times are longer than ever before, and the intro counts for each song, which previously hadn’t been fully captured, have been extended by a few seconds. However, these few seconds are merely evidence of the re-digitization. The essential sound has also been upgraded, with rounded edges now crisp and sharp, while still maintaining a natural feel. Garf Zeppelin’s finishing touches are also outstanding. The previously inverted stereo positioning has been corrected, and the pitch has been more precisely adjusted. Furthermore, the (very subtle) high-frequency noise in the right channel, which was also recorded on the Cozy Tape itself, has been neatly removed, resulting in a clearer, more distinct sound for the performance. Cozy Tape #2: Vocal Demo Tracks (4 Songs) Next up is a demo featuring Coverdale’s vocals. This is, so to speak, a “different version of SLIDE IT IN.” While it’s getting closer to the final version, the roughness of the demo vocals gives it a studio-live feel that’s quite appealing. What emerges here is the power of Cozy Powell and Colin Hodgkinson. “SLIDE IT IN” was originally produced by Cozy and Colin for release in Europe and Japan, but Geffen USA requested a remix for the US market. At that time, they replaced the bass with Neil Murray, creating the so-called “US REMIX.” While John Sykes’s overdubbed guitar solo was well-received, the change in rhythm section didn’t have much of a positive effect. A rhythm section is like the foundation of a house; you usually build from the foundation and then add the rest. Replacing the foundation of a house once it’s already complete is a drastic move. While Neil, as expected of a master, managed to pull it off seamlessly, the original groove was lost. This album showcases the original Cozy and Colin groove. Cozy’s drum patterns are not simply powerful, but are conveyed in detail, complemented by Hodgkinson’s thunderous, threatening bass. Cozy’s drumming is so intense and distinctive that it can easily drown out the bass. Yet Hodgkinson, perfectly in sync with his bass, exudes a presence that seems to say, “Listen to my bass!” This is no ordinary musician. The two men didn’t get along as people, but that’s precisely why their sharp rivalry is so vividly apparent. This album also includes two bonus tracks: the Eddie Kramer mix featured on the pre-release single “Guilty of Love.” This single was released in conjunction with their appearance at “MONSTERS OF ROCK 1983,” while “SLIDE IT IN” was still in production. It was produced by Eddie Kramer, not Martin Birch. The single features the title track “Guilty of Love” and the B-side “Gambler,” and was released in its original Eddie Kramer form. While “SLIDE IT IN” is now available on CD in the 35th anniversary box set, this release is not a copy; it’s a digital rendition of the original single. Like the Cozy Tapes, you can enjoy the original sound with a natural analog feel. This treasured collection spans 11 tracks and 45 minutes and 50 seconds. It’s not simply a different version of “SLIDE IT IN,” but a masterful studio release that more vividly captures the power and talent of the original rhythm section. The left and right stereo transfers of the first half of the album from the master cassette differ from the previous release, but this was recorded on the cassette (perhaps a transfer error on the previous release), and based on the hi-hat positioning and other factors, we believe the balance on this release is correct. The pitch has also been corrected. There are some inter-song audio tracks, not heard on the previous release, at the beginning of the CD and near the beginning of track 4, which are included for the first time. This is the demo album for the classic “SLIDE IT IN.” Featuring two Cozy tapes, this latest release features a highly accurate transfer and mastered by Garf Zeppelin, delivering a truly updated and updated album. The five backing tracks showcase the power of Cozy and Hodgkinson, while the four vocal demo tracks offer alternative versions of classic tracks. This definitive “Slide It In” demo also includes two Eddie Kramer mixes, exclusive to the single. Taken from the original cassette tape (TDK SA-X60) belonged to Cozy Powell UPGRADE & LONGER!!!
