Description
This 73-minute recording features Jaco’s first performance as a member of Weather on April 1st in Michigan, a show that began on a US tour shortly after Jaco officially joined the band in 1976. The newly discovered soundboard master has been remastered in 2025, resulting in a surprisingly high-quality recording. Due to significant aging, the master has been updated with state-of-the-art equipment to reduce noise, balance adjustments, and increased sound pressure. The powerful and heavy sound, centered around tracks from the recently released “Black Market,” is clearly a result of Jaco’s addition, marking the beginning of a new Weather. While the album showcased Zawinul’s commanding and precise sound, the live performance showcases Jaco’s superhuman bass playing, as well as the impressive rhythm section of Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena, with Zawinul and Shorter actively joining in, creating a thrilling interplay throughout. In any case, this is a dynamic performance that was unique to this period, and it was also a memorable first live performance by Jaco, who was still an unknown newcomer who had appeared like a comet at the time, and it was a night that shook the jazz world.
