Description

From the 1978 US tour accompanying the release of “Mr. Gone” in 1978, which can be said to be the golden age of the band with the immovable members Joe Zabinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, and Peter Erskine for five years, the performance at Stony Brook University in New York on November 5th was recorded almost completely over 2 hours and 7 minutes, with the newly excavated original audience master and the latest mastering in 2025. The master tape used is a good taper-owned master tape that has been released online in recent years, and the sound is full of realism with a moderate reverberation in the venue, and Jaco’s bass notes are clearly recorded, which is due to the amazing quality at the time. This tour also had a performance in Japan in June of that year, and from this US tour that took place from August to November, selected live recordings from four performances are recorded on “8:30”, but it is also nice that the live performance on this day is not recorded. The first half of the show started with the familiar “Black Market”, and from the third song onwards, the main songs were from “Mr.Gone”, and the show proceeded in a free-form style just like the album. Among them, “Young And Fine”, in which Zabinul introduced polyphonic synths throughout, showed a different color from the previous songs, but the best part was Jaco’s bass, which dominated the space, and the way it undulated like an earthquake throughout the whole song was overwhelming. The show accelerated with “Mr.Gone”, which could be called a perverted 4-beat, and the members’ solo parts were also featured towards the end, and the contrast between Shorter’s beautiful unaccompanied solo in the middle and Jaco’s solo with sample and hold that followed was a must-listen. In any case, it was a transitional period from Zabinul’s sound to the establishment of the band’s sound, and it is a must-listen for fans because it is a masterpiece that gives you a sense of the unrivaled tension and tremendous creativity that no one else can match.
