Description
This is a rare recording that is a must-listen for fans, and includes studio rehearsal recordings that were unreleased during the recording of the album “Mysterious Traveler” in 1974. It was also a time when they turned their attention to technological breakthroughs, rather than extracting a more refined sound from key creative members such as keyboardist Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Shorter is largely absent, and Zawinul is experimenting with a range of ecoplex-equipped electronic pianos, such as Arps and Mogus, to compete with percussion. Still, there’s some good music on this album, which was reissued without any additions. “Nubian Sundance” creates a sense of exhilaration through complex rhythms and the cheers of the crowd. Bassist Alphonso Johnson, a newcomer to Weather Report’s ever-changing lineup, brings a funkier, more agreeable touch to the band than his fired predecessor, the (much overrated) Miroslav Vitos.
