Description

This newly discovered stereo master recording of their live performance at the Internationale Stifesti Festival in Ossiach, Austria, which served as a warm-up for their first North American tour in 1971, has been released in stunning quality. Looking back at their 1971 American tour, which shocked the nation, their scheduled appearance at Newport Jazz on July 5 was canceled due to riots, so they kicked off with the Boston Jazz Workshop on the 19th. They then flew to Germany to perform at the Beat Club, then a short flight back to New York, followed by six shows at the Cellar Door, and finally the Boston Garden on December 9th. While the show was held in a region with a large concentration of hardcore jazz fans, it made a huge impact and marked Weather Report’s spectacular launch, making it a memorable tour. It is a legendary tour highly sought after among jazz enthusiasts, said to have inherited the style of Miles Davis’ album “Bitches Brew,” featuring Zawinul and Shorter, and to have expressed a more cutting-edge musical style. This definitive release features a real stereo soundboard recording with a different master tape than the “Austria 1971” recording released over 20 years ago. Of course, there’s no ugly imitation like equalization. Enjoy the complete soundboard recording, packed with the essence of this historic discovery.
