Description

Following the smash success of “RATTLE AND HUM,” the “LOVETOWN Tour” took place. This full-length live album lets you experience U2’s largest Oceania tour to date. This work captures the “October 13, 1989 Melbourne performance,” a vacuum-packed recording of the scorching hot audience. Since the “THE JOSHUA TREE Tour” focused heavily on North America, the band’s next “LOVETOWN Tour” deliberately excluded North America. The band toured a wide range of other countries. Oceania was a particular focus. An unprecedentedly large schedule was planned, making this their largest Oceania tour yet. Let’s start with a bird’s-eye view of this historic tour. September 21st – October 28th, 1989: Australia #1 (20 shows) ←★here★ November 4th – 11th: New Zealand (4 shows) November 17th – 19th: Australia #2 (3 shows) November 23rd – December 1st: Japan (6 shows) ←※Tokyo Dome 1989 1st Night and more December 11th – 31st: Europe (10 shows) 1990 January 5th – 10th: Netherlands (4 shows) This is the full picture of the “LOVETOWN Tour.” Outside of Europe, Oceania and Japan were the only other shows. While their Australian tours typically consist of just under 10 shows, the “LOVETOWN Tour” included 23 shows. The Melbourne performance on this album was the 14th show. This work, recorded at the scene, is a masterpiece that combines the passion of the band at the height of their popularity with powerful performances. This is the best master provided by an overseas U2 researcher, and the heat of the scene erupts from the very beginning. It was the height of their popularity, but that’s not all. Witnessing the astronomical success of “THE JOSHUA TREE,” the drought that didn’t come on tour. The “hunger” of the long-awaited, tired crowd creates intense pressure and fills the venue. And the performance sound, which instantly dominates the heat and takes center stage, is amazing. While not the type that could be mistaken for a soundboard, its core is powerful, penetrating straight through the center of the realistic atmosphere, looming large with detail. It brilliantly overturns the expectation that “this won’t be heard” at the moment of playback, resulting in a scorching live album that freely guides and excites the large crowd. Such a scorching sound depicts a full show with delicious tour-only songs. While the “LOVETOWN Tour” is mostly known for its Japan tour, Oceania is a little different. Here’s a breakdown of the full set, focusing on rare tracks: Joshua Tree (6 songs): Where the Streets Have No Name / I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For / One Tree Hill / Bullet the Blue Sky / Running to Stand Still / With Or Without You. Soul Cry (9 songs): Hawkmoon 269 (★★) / Desire / All Along the Watchtower / All I Want Is You / God Part II (★) / Van Diemen’s Land / Angel of Harlem / When Love Comes to Town / Love Rescue Me. Others (7 songs): ?: MLK / Bad / Pride (In the Name of Love). Others: I Will Follow / New Year’s Day / Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door / “40” *Note: ★ indicates songs exclusive to the “LOVETOWN Tour.” In particular, the “★★” marks indicate extremely rare songs that were not even performed in Japan. …And so it goes. While “Hawkmoon 269” and “God Part II” are exclusive to this tour, the opening track “Hawkmoon 269” is especially significant. It’s been confirmed only eight times to date, making it an extremely rare song that wasn’t even performed in Japan immediately afterward. This authentic live album captures the fervor of the band’s biggest Oceania tour ever, the passionate performances that met that welcome, and an extremely rare setlist. This is truly a cultural heritage masterpiece. This is a recording of the scorching audience at the Melbourne concert on October 13, 1989.
