Description
Tom Petty’s debut years saw him perform scorching hot shows every night. This soundboard album will immerse you in the intense live performances. This work features a stereo soundboard recording of the April 23, 1977, Sausalito performance at the legendary Record Plant studio. Tom’s record debut was in 1976, but his tours didn’t really begin until the following year, 1977. The pro-shot album “ROCKPALAST 1977 HD REBROADCAST” was also very well-received, but of course (?) this is a different performance. First, let’s take a look at the schedule and see where each performance fits in. 1976 (“American Girl” released November 9th) November 24th – December 15th: North America #1 (13 shows) 1977 February 9th – March 20th: North America #2 (23 shows) April 23rd – 27th: North America #3 (4 shows) ←★here★ May 8th – June 25th: Europe (33 shows) ←※ROCKPALAST 1977 August 5th – September 16th: North America #4 (13 shows) October 26th – December 2nd: North America #5 (18 shows) This is the highest peak record created from the pre-FM master rebroadcast. This is Tom Petty’s debut era. The masterpiece pro shot “ROCKPALAST 1977” was recorded on his first European tour, but this Usarito performance was about two months earlier. It was the opening day of “North America #3.” This live performance was originally intended for radio broadcast, a staple that has spawned numerous pre-release releases. This CD was released from that best-of master. It’s not a ’70s release, but a 1986 rebroadcast version featuring “Dogs on the Run,” released on CD from the pre-FM master. While the broadcast itself feels like an “official excavation,” its freshness is undeniable. The raw, unedited performance is clearly raw, with no traces of dubbing, aging, or tape warping. It’s as if the radio waves transcending time and space are reaching directly into your brain. This soundboard album lets you immerse yourself in the primal impulse. This top-notch sound captures the passionate performance of a 26-year-old about to break into the world. If you’ve read this article, you’ve likely experienced “ROCKPALAST 1977 HD REBROADCAST” (if you haven’t, be sure to check it out!), but this set is similar but not identical. Let’s compare and organize the two. American Girl (4 songs) American Girl / Fooled Again (I Don’t Like It) / Luna (★★) / Strangered in the Night Others (2 songs + 4 songs) Your Gonna Get It!: Listen To Her Heart / I Need to Know Others: Surrender (★) / Jaguar And Thunderbird / Dog On The Run (★) / Route 66 *Note: The “★” mark indicates limited songs that have not been played since “HARD PROMISES.” In particular, the “★★” mark indicates songs that could not be heard even on “ROCKPALAST 1977 HD REBROADCAST.” …And so on. Starting with “Luna,” which was not included in the classic pro shots, the masterpieces such as “Surrender” and “Dog On The Run” are delicious. This repertoire will no longer be played with breaks, and playing this solidly is also a rich early mood. Following on from the classic pro-shot “ROCKPALAST 1977,” this must-listen soundboard album from his debut days is a delightful album that will send Tom Petty’s initial impulses, burning with stage tension, directly into your brain. This stereo soundboard recording from the April 23, 1977, performance at Record Plant Studios. The sound, recently released on CD from the pre-FM master of the 1986 rebroadcast, is “official excavation quality.” The raw, unprocessed live performance erupts, creating a direct feeling, as if broadcast waves transcending time and space are reaching directly into your brain. Enjoy the initial impulse of his debut days, including “Luna,” a track not heard on “ROCKPALAST 1977.” Record Plant, Sausalito, California, USA 23rd April 1977 (46:06) 01. Surrender 02.
