Steely Dan’s tour this year is titled “Shuffle Diplomacy”, and they performed a total of 63 live shows in North America and Oceania from July 2 to November 5. This Toronto performance was the 13th show, and was the beginning of the tour. Fagen & Becker had stopped working as a unit since 1980, but in 1993, they resumed their activities as Steely Dan after Becker produced Fagen’s second album “Kamakiriad”, and have been touring consistently since then. Last year, they toured with Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald, and Donald Fagen as “Dukes of September,” so this will be their first tour as Steely Dan in two years. As for the members, except for the new addition of backing vocalist Cindy Mizell, the rest are the regular members who have been there for a while, so it goes without saying that the ensemble is rock solid, with well-calculated chord work, precise voicing, exquisitely intertwined melodies, etc., and the flawless and unique Fagen world is still worth listening to from start to finish! In terms of the set list, this day was a regular set, but from the middle of the tour onwards, they decided on a theme for each day, such as “Aja” day, “Gaucho” day, days with only early songs, and only rare songs, and the content shows how fulfilling they are now.
