Description

A recent collection of HD-quality live footage of Sheila E. has been released on Blu-ray. It starts with 25 years of professional footage from NSJ, followed by audience shots. The band is comprised of a younger lineup, without tour and production manager and bassist Raymond McKinley. Still, it features Lynn Mabry, a former P-Funk alumna, and Rose Ann Dimalanta, who briefly joined NPG in 2003, and RAD. The album also features a cover of “Stroke ’75,” a classic single by fellow Oakland band Tower of Power. Naturally, Sheila is on drums, and with David Garibaldi no longer at the helm, it’s easy to imagine Sheila taking over. Sheila, who also played in Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band, delivers a funky arrangement of “Yellow Submarine” and a stunning drum solo. She then urges the audience to sing along to “Kiss,” even though she doesn’t usually sing along herself. Then, we introduced Sheila’s father, Pete Escopedo, who turns 90 tomorrow, July 12th. Together, they performed Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing” with Lynn on vocals, adding a touch of Latin flavor. Prince’s “A Love Bizarre” and “The Glamorous Life” also featured powerful new sounds with Sheila’s new band. Audience footage complemented the pro-shot footage with performances of “Oakland N Da House,” a new track from Sheila’s 2023 album, “Hella Fonk E,” a happy birthday to Pete, and other MCs. Then, here’s a live performance of Tiny Desk, featuring Raymond on bass. They performed a salsa number from Sheila’s 2024 album, “Bilar,” her first in seven years, and it was very danceable. After everyone sipped tequila, they also performed a cheerful and lovely “Playa Tequila.” And here’s a slightly older shot, likely taken by someone involved with the band, of their June 25, 2010, Hampton Jazz Festival concert. “Icon” hadn’t been released yet, but they played Prince’s “Leader of the Band.” The set also included many Prince-related songs. Sheila is intimately familiar with Prince’s live performances, and her unique rearrangements are truly spine-tinglingly cool. For example, her faithful studio arrangement of “Holly Rock” offers a sound you won’t find in a Prince concert. Sheila then tenderly raps on “Transmississippirap,” a song she wrote as a child, incorporating a poem from Edward Lear’s book “The Table and the Chair.” This is the rap she recorded over the phone while she was in Tennessee on tour during the production of “It’s Gonna Be a Beautiful Night.” And then, “Can I play guitar?” He asks the audience, searching carefully for a place to play, and then when he finally does, he plays not “Purple Rain” but “Rockstar,” which is truly moving. “Rockstar” certainly does resemble “Purple Rain.” The Prince medley at the end is also fantastic, with its arrangement of “America” and the exquisite incorporation of “Free.” And Sheila’s dancing is wonderful. There will be a brief cut at the end of the live performance as Sheila plays her drums. Please be aware of this.
