This is an audience recording of a Seattle concert on October 15, 1972, just before the release of Santana Band’s fourth album, “Caravanserai.” The sound is very clear with a comfortable sense of separation and directness of the instruments! Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie also participated in the album, but since they had essentially left the Santana Band, the North American tour that began in October 1972 could be said to be the start of a new lineup. Santana was most interested in Indian philosophy and Hinduism at this time, and was heavily influenced by jazz musicians such as John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane, and John McLaughlin. Even after this period, Santana continued to tour energetically with frequent member changes, and released many albums, including studio albums such as “Welcome” (1973) and “Borboletta” (1974), as well as albums with McLaughlin, “Love Devotion Surrender” (1973), “Illuminations” (1974), and “Lotus” (1974), which recorded the Santana Band’s performance in Japan. The live show begins with a superb medley of A-1 Funk Every Step Of The Way, and it seemed to fit the band well, as they toured with a set list that began with this pattern until around 1974. (The performances from this lineup have been released as soundboard/complete (or almost complete) recordings of the Essington, Pennsylvania performance on October 28th, Montreux (Switzerland) performance on November 25th, Rotterdam performance on December 1st, and Amsterdam performance on December 3rd.) The entire performance is worth listening to, and the soloists’ sharp interplay, centered around Michael Shrieve’s exquisite rhythm work, is truly spine-chilling!
