Description

The Fillmore is the live house of Bill Graham, the man who brought Santana to stardom. This live performance in the east part of New York is recorded with a wonderful soundboard recording, and the confident opening “Soul Sacrifice” foreshadows a spectacular live performance. The second song is “Jungle Strut,” which Prince also covers in “Santana Medley.” It makes you think that Prince was listening to this live performance. It’s so thrilling! Greg shouts, “Why is it so quiet?”, but it’s certainly an amazing performance that is overwhelming. The elegance of “Black Magic Woman / Gypsy” sung by Greg! Rock that makes Zeppelin numb! The sound is good, so you should definitely listen to the Latin breath that flows in “Waiting” and the rare melancholy of “Samba Pa Ti”. From there, the melancholy continues and leads to “Toussaint L’Overture,” which is also played in “Santana Medley.” Santana’s guitar is more elaborate than Prince’s on “Evil Ways,” but the recklessness of the following “Everybody’s Everything” is amazing. It’s so groovy, even without horns! There’s a great solo, whether it’s Santana or Shawn! And the strongest “Gumbo” groove from Greg’s words “Ready?” It’s killer! And lastly? The guitar is dancing in “Conquistador Rides Again,” which is a must-listen! Fillmore East, New York April 3, 1971 1 Soul Sacrifice 2 Jungle Strut 3 Black Magic Woman / Gypsy Queen 4 Oye Como Va 5 Waiting 6 Samba Pa Ti 7 Toussaint L’Overture 8 Evil Ways 9 Everybody’s Everything 10 Gumbo 11 Conquistador Rides Again
