Description
Santana, who rose to fame as the world’s greatest live band with their masterpiece album “Lotus” in 1974, is getting two soundboard albums released simultaneously! This is the second of two simultaneous releases, a stereo soundboard recording of their “San Bernardino performance on September 20, 1974.” Speaking of 1974 soundboards, the recently released “Fresno 1974 Soundboard” is still fresh in our memories. This week’s two-part series can be considered a sequel to that soundboard album. To understand the situation, let’s first take a look at an overview of their activities at the time. January 14, 1974: Ithaca performance (release of ‘LOTUS’ in May and ‘GREATEST HITS’ in July) – July 13 – October 28: North America (62 performances) ←★HERE★ (release of ‘BORBOLETTA’ in October) – November 16: Honolulu performance – November 23 – December 14: Japan (16 performances) This was Santana in 1974. It’s a memorable year because it marked their second visit to Japan, but the main focus was their main battleground, “North America.” Both ‘FRESNO 1974 SOUNDBOARD’ and this two-part series were recorded in “North America.” So let’s take a closer look at the dates and confirm their relative locations. Details of the “North America” tour: July 13th + 17th (2 shows) * July 22nd ‘EDMONTON 1974 SOUNDBOARD’ July 24th – September 14th (20 shows) * September 15th ‘FRESNO 1974 SOUNDBOARD’ September 17th + 18th (2 shows) * September 20th: San Bernardino show ←★This work★ September 21st – October 28th (32 shows) The first appearance of the three SBD sisters born from the collection of the deceased…and so on. The San Bernardino show for this work was the most recent stage, just five days (three shows) after the highly successful ‘FRESNO 1974 SOUNDBOARD’. Recorded at that show, this work is a new masterpiece that is truly a sister work to ‘FRESNO 1974’. Currently, the belongings of a certain core collector are attracting worldwide attention, and all three works mentioned above were discovered from that collection of belongings. The quality is remarkably similar, a truly superb, direct-to-the-mix-board sound. While it lacks the polished finish of official releases or FM broadcasts, it delivers an intense, raw, and unrestrained live performance. Instead of the concert hall experience, it feels as if your skull has become part of the PA system. The feeling of being completely synchronized with the world’s greatest live band is an otherworldly experience. This ultra-direct soundboard recording captures a full show with a set different from its sister releases, a show that is similar yet distinct from both the simultaneously released ‘EDMONTON 1974’ and the more recent ‘FRESNO 1974’. Finally, let’s summarize by comparing it to both works. Guardian of Heaven – Black Magic Woman-Gypsy Queen / Oye Como Va / Incident At Nashabur / Samba Pa Ti Others – Santana: Soul Sacrifice / Savor (★) – Immortal Butterfly: Mirage / Give And Take – Others: Medley [Going Home / A-1 Funk / Every Step Of The Way] / Just In Time To See The Sun / Bambele / Toussaint L’Overture (★★) *Note: Tracks marked with “★” were not included in ‘FRESNO 1974 SOUNDBOARD’. Tracks marked with “★★” are not included in the simultaneously released ‘EDMONTON 1974 SOUNDBOARD’. This is the latest installment in the SANTANA soundboard series, which has been shaking the world with its top-notch quality, from a collection of relics belonging to a core collector where previously unheard treasures are being discovered one after another. It is great to listen to this as the original version of ‘LOTUS’, or to line up the three sister albums and experience the tour together.
