Description

The arrest of Keith Richards in Toronto, who was at one point threatened with life imprisonment for illegally possessing drugs, resulted in a clemency sentence. One of them was to hold a charity concert for the blind organization CNIB (Canadian National Institute For The Blind). The concert took place on April 22, 1979 in Oshawa, Canada. This not only responded to the sentence imposed on Keith, but also made this day a very special day for the Stones’ live history. In the first place, in 1979, the Stones’ tour was not held at Mick’s suggestion, and instead they focused on the production of the album “EMOTIONAL RESCUE”. Meanwhile, Ronnie Wood had just completed his third solo album, “GIMME SOME NECK,” and naturally his record company was asking for promotional activities. The timing was like that, so if the Stones weren’t going to tour, I decided to replace them with the New Barbarians. By the way, “GIMME SOME NECK” was released two days before the CNIB concert, making the event perfect timing for the group’s debut gig. As a result of these circumstances, the charity concert in Oshawa became an unusual and groundbreaking event in which the show was split equally between the Barbarians and the Stones. Of course, Keith and Ronnie are in a band, and yet it is an unusual composition in that they essentially serve as the opening act for the Stones. Not only was it a perfect venue for the new band’s debut gig, but it also became one of the few live performances for the Stones, who had decided not to tour. This rare one-day charity concert will be held twice. The overwhelming sense of familiarity for enthusiasts will be the second show, which is blessed with sound sources and items. In contrast, First Show was extremely little known. Not only was it a show with few items to begin with, but the timing of the release of the LP “PLACE AUX DAMES: SHADES ‘N’ CANES,” which was released to coincide with the Stones’ 1981-82 tour, was questionable. (released after a concert or three years later), and only the Stones’ parts were included. The final straw was that it was an audience recording with very poor sound quality. In fact, many items from the Second Show have continued to be produced to this day, but there are no other items from the First Show other than the same LP, and it is considered that unless you are a serious core enthusiast, you have never heard of it. It was there. However, perhaps fortunately, there were two other types of monaural audience recordings for the first show. However, each of the two types of sound sources are not at the level of high sound quality, but as expected, the quality was far more listenable than “PLACE AUX DAMES: SHADES ‘N’ CANES”. Therefore, this time we will release the longest version, featuring the best sound source among the three existing audience recordings including LP, and using the other two as supplementary personnel. The main sound source used is a sound image with a sense of distance, and the New Barbarians part has a dumpling-like sound quality, but enthusiasts will be able to enjoy it. This is a recording with a strong analog boot feel throughout. With this release, the debut stage of the New Barbarians at the first show has become clear, but if you listen to it like this, you will be surprised to see that they are playing surprisingly tight. As their standard live sound source and video, May’s Lago, proved, the New Barbarians’ performance is at its roughest and loosest. However, the performance they will give here is so tight that it seems to overturn that image…Or rather, it is probably the result of playing hard since it was their stage debut. There is a video of this episode taken from the audience seats, and it shows a literally wise Ronnie singing while looking at the lyrics on a music stand. What’s more, the fact that the composition of the set list is quite different compared to the second show is also interesting. From their point of view, they probably wanted to warm up before the tour they had already booked and perform all the repertoire they had prepared for this day’s show. “Lost And Lonely” is a repertoire that was only played in this episode, and its performance is quite good. Furthermore, unlike the second show, Ronnie’s harmonica solo does not appear in “Am I Grooving You”, and it is valuable that it is a short arrangement that only includes Stanley Clarke’s bass solo. On the other hand, it was surprising to hear that the Stones, who showed off such a turbulent stage at the second show, suddenly gave a smart and stable performance here. In the example of “PLACE AUX DAMES: SHADES ‘N’ CANES”, it was difficult to hear the details of the performance, so I think a surprising sound source was released for many enthusiasts. Perhaps the feeling of the previous year’s tour was still left, the powerful performance that is unique to the first show is very rewarding to listen to. Among them, it looks fresh that “Star Star”, which became the most happening in the second show, is being played smoothly. From the 1979 CNIB concert, which until now had overwhelmingly been filled with items from the second show, the complete collection of the first show, which brought tears of mania, has finally been released on a limited press CD. For its release, it not only made full use of other sources to compensate for missing parts, but also thoroughly adjusted the unstable pitch, which was a big problem in listening, to create a result that can be listened to suddenly. For enthusiasts, the release of Stones’ vintage live sound source that can be enjoyed with a fresher feeling than the standard second show. Please enjoy listening to and comparing with the second show released at the same time! ★The 1st Show was only available in analog form. ★There are two types of audience. Use the better-sounding source as the main source, and fill in the missing parts with the 2nd Source and LP Source. ★As for the pitch, the LP source is almost the same, so I used it without adjusting it. (Because the performance section is not used) Source 1/Source 2 is randomly out of order, so it has been adjusted. “Canadian National Institute for the Blind Benefit” Oshawa Stadium, Toronto, Canada 22nd April 1979 (1st Show) Disc 1 (44:43) THE NEW BARBARIANS 1.
