Description
This is the last multi-track recording release for radio broadcast of the 1981 US tour supervised by Graf Zeppelin. As a fitting conclusion, the last title is the second day of Hampton, which was also the final day of the entire tour. There were two live performances in the same place in 1981, but the first day is a famous performance that can be said to be an eternal item for Stones enthusiasts in both video and audio, and it has now been officially released. Above all, there is no doubt that “Hampton” is a must-have live recording for all Stones fans, so much so that when you say “Hampton”, you are referring to those materials. In that respect, although the second day of Hampton, which was also the final day of the tour, was multi-track recorded based on one of the releases, in the end only one song, “Just My Imagination”, saw the light of day. Instead, audience recordings have existed for a long time, and although they were also circulating among traders, the existence of the video and audio from the previous day was so enormous that it was not released. In a sense, it is the final performance of 1981 shrouded in mystery. It is no exaggeration to say that this sound source, which has been passed down only among such enthusiasts, was released exactly 10 years ago. The title and artwork were taken from the LP “GRANDE FINALE,” which was highly acclaimed as the best quality version of the previous day’s broadcast sound source, and yet the content was a CD that recorded the second day of Hampton, the genuine tour finale. Although the sound image was a little distant, the release of “GRANDE FINALE” was groundbreaking, as it was of a quality that enthusiasts could enjoy without any problems. Two years later, this day was also included in the large amount of radio rough mix sound sources of the 1981 tour on the “CONCERT VAULT” site, so it was a big deal. While enthusiasts around the world were listening to the CD “GRANDE FINALE” with pleasure, it was said that the final day of the tour could be heard on an unexpected multi-track sound board. There was already a tendency for the sound quality and balance of radio recordings to stabilize as the performances continued from Rosemont at the end of November, but by the final day of the tour, the recording side knew what they were doing. Among the many ’81 tour recordings that appeared in 2013, the sound quality and balance stood out, and it was so well-made that it felt like an official live album at first glance. The ’81 multi-sound sources that have been re-released so far have been notable for the recent Rosemont and Landover performances, and the rough texture and presence of the two guitarists, which is not found in the official version, was attractive. In that respect, the second day of Hampton had already been adjusted for such roughness, and it was delivered in such a good condition that it could be used as an official live album as it was, as long as the balance of each instrument was adjusted. It is no exaggeration to say that this wonderful stereo soundboard recording of the second day of Hampton was an endless dream for enthusiasts. I think this is the source that made enthusiasts ecstatic among the 2013 releases. The appearance of this sound source also revealed that, as usual, when “Just My Imagination,” the only release from the second day of Hampton, was included in the live album “STILL LIFE,” the parts other than the vocals were cut out in detail. The relentless editing made the performance about three minutes shorter, and the saxophone solo by Ernie Watts in the postlude was boldly cut in its entirety. The fact that the song, which was so far removed from the original performance, could be heard completely here also greatly pleased enthusiasts at the time. And since the original sound quality was extremely excellent for this release, Graf Zeppelin did not need to make any major changes. Rather, they reviewed the cuts that had occurred in “Let Me Go” and “Satisfaction,” and re-adjusted the sound quality of the audience recording of “GRANDE FINALE” to compensate for it. This reduces the sense of incongruity when listening with headphones compared to the previous time. The performance was free from the pressure of the previous day’s live broadcast, and even though it was the final day of the tour, they did not let their guard down and performed a highly polished performance from start to finish. The only thing that stood out was the unevenness of Keith’s riff in the opening song “Under My Thumb,” but this may have been the result of Keith blowing kisses to the audience while he was playing, just like the previous day. What really stood out was Keith’s raspy voice singing “Little T & A.” Unlike him today, in 1981 and 1982 Keith only had one song on stage, so it is assumed that he had no strain on his throat, but even so, perhaps he was tired because it was the final day of the tour. One of the highlights is the fact that this unusual scene for this time of year is captured with the best sound quality. After all, the entire live performance was a perfect performance worthy of the final day, so this scene stands out even more. And the multi-track live album captured the second day of Hampton with perfect sound quality. One of the most popular radio broadcast rough mixes is finally back! (Remastering notes) Slight correction to overall volume balance (volume difference). No EQ processing (no problem to begin with). The two cut sections were phase corrected and supplemented with the Aud source from the same performance. Live at Coliseum, Hampton, Virginia, USA 19th December 1981 STEREO SBD Disc 1 (74:23) 1.
