Description

The second release of the Babylon tour is the San Diego broadcast sound source, a classic sound source from 1998. This live was recorded and broadcast by Westwood One, a radio station known for broadcasting big concerts in the United States. Due to the nature of the stereo soundboard recording of the radio sound source, various items were produced immediately after it was broadcast. Among them, VGP’s “STONED IN SAN DIEGO 1998” and Dandelion’s “SAN DIEGO ’98”, which was finished with a flashy equalization that is typical of the late 1990s, were known as representative titles. In particular, the second version of the former, which was re-released based on the broadcast disc from the first air check sound source, is the best of this sound source. Regarding the release, the highest sound quality version based on the broadcast disc was released, and the high sound quality was unexpectedly well received, which led to the promotion of this release. At the time of “STONED IN~”, the highest quality sound item already exists, and above all, since the original is a broadcast sound source disc, the level of the sound quality does not change dramatically. However, the highest sound quality recorded from the radio show disc on a non-equalized straight is still wonderful, and it will be a new standard item of the standard sound source that allows you to enjoy the wonderful performance of the Stones, who were about to perform in Japan, with a perfect stereo sound board recording. The 1998 itinerary of the Babylon tour began with a rescheduling due to Mick catching a cold. Nevertheless, in January, it opened with a series of performances at Madison Square Garden, which became a regular event after that, and a performance in Hawaii for the first time since 1973 (naturally many Japanese people visited). At those shows, songs from the album that had not been played live until then were played, and even rare numbers from the past were played, which also served as further promotion for “BRIDGES TO BABYLON”, and it was also a hot topic, but at the first live show in February in San Diego, it felt like those attempts had come to an end and they had returned to normal business mode with radio recording in mind. That margin exploded with “Flip The Switch”, one of the songs that represented the Babylon tour. The performance was wonderful, with Mick regaining his intensity compared to January when he had just recovered from his illness, and it seemed to sum up the content of the live show that day. As is well known, this broadcast sound source was broadcast in a very unclear state with a strong echo (although it is much better than New Orleans in 1994…), but still the destructive power of this performance was not spoiled. Also, as with this song, Keith makes momentary mistakes, such as holding the wrong chords in “Wanna Hold You”. Still, it is interesting that it was broadcast without editing. Rather, it was just a happening that was too much energy, and it was not enough to make the impression of the performance worse. Not only was it surrounded by the echo mentioned earlier, but as a phenomenon unique to Westwood One’s live broadcast, narration was inserted at several places during the live performance, and then it moved to a commercial break. As with past items, this time, all the commercials were cut and recorded, but the announcements that are inserted everywhere are left as they are. Moreover, a short interview with Keith at the opening, which was cut in past items, is recorded along with the background music “Low Down”. These points may be considered heretical among the many radio broadcasts of the Stones, but this time it was recorded in the most faithful form to the broadcast, and on top of that, it is a stereo soundboard recording with the highest sound quality!
