Description

Loose, just too loose. The Rolling Stones’ 1981 American tour may have a strong impression of a very speedy performance with Hampton in the later movies, and the live album “STILL LIFE”. However, in the early stages of the tour, they played a very slow performance, which was also demonstrated in the actually released “PHILADELPHIA 1981 DAY 1”. The opening game of the 1981 tour was held in Philadelphia for two days, but the Stones’ performance was not organized at all in Buffalo, which was the third day of the tour. Normally, a professional band would rehearse thoroughly and complete the tour by the first day of the tour, but this was the Stones in 1981, and at this point it was like a public rehearsal. It is said that he performed in front of a large audience at the stadium, giving a performance that seemed to give the impression that he was playing in front of a large crowd at the stadium. Buffalo, which will be released on September 27th, had previously discovered a soundboard from the DAC label, and that has been the main source for the past 10 years. However, before that, there was an audience recording that conveyed the slapstick feeling of this day’s performance, and it was released as “BUFFALO ’81” in the early 1990s. This is an excellent sound source with a stereo sound image that is surprisingly on, and it was naturally useful as a supplementary staff when the previous sound board was released. It was one of the outstanding audience recordings during the 1981 tour. On the other hand, with the advent of soundboards, there is a feeling that the sound source itself has been overlooked, and it can be said that it is an unfortunate audience that only “BUFFALO ’81”, which was released on record, still exists. The master cassette version of such a hidden masterpiece suddenly appeared on the internet this month. It seems that the person who recorded the recording made the sound source public, and not only included his own recording position, but also a scan of the ticket for the day. In fact, “BUFFALO ’81” is also in surprisingly good condition for a release from the cassette trade era, and the only thing I regret about it is that the pitch was high, but since this time it is only a master cassette, the pitch is Accurate from beginning to end. Moreover, compared to “BUFFALO ’81”, the upper feels as if the last remaining thin skin has been removed. When I listen to this upper version, I can’t help but be surprised at the Stones’ performance, which has a low level of perfection (bitter smile). In the first place, even after Bill Graham’s opening call ends, the performance does not start immediately and there is a gap, and when “Under My Thumb” starts, it gets sluggish. From there, the performances continued to lack momentum, but Charlie, who was supposed to be good at playing “Down The Road Apiece”, which was a rare repertoire at the beginning of the tour, stumbled at the beginning and made a mistake in the structure of the song midway through. A lot of things like trying to lead to the ending. Because of that, it wasn’t played for a while (though it was only occasionally featured after that). It’s also interesting that the positions of “She’s So Cold” and “Let Me Go” are opposite compared to the later ones, and what’s more, the performance of the former is scattered over and over again. In the end, right after they finished “Let It Bleed,” Ronnie yelled at something being thrown from the audience, and as expected, the new song “Tops,” which had no sign of being good live from the beginning, ended in a shaky performance. It’s so interesting to see such a lost performance that is completely different from the speedy performance of 1981 that we are used to hearing.
