Description

The Rolling Stones’ 1981 Buffalo was very popular, and the original sound source was originally discovered on the day when a soundboard with a PA output was discovered, and I felt that it had become the standard these days, so I decided to treat it as a gift. However, on the other hand, it falls into a very high quality category as an audience recording of the 1981 tour. Also, the sound board recording of the PA out appeared as part of the excavation rush at that time and was released as “BUFFALO’S ROCK ‘N’ ROLL ANIMALS”. However, the sound quality was particularly rough among the series of SBDs leaked in 1981, and even so, what made enthusiasts happy was that it was a valuable early part of the tour playing valuable songs. Also, since this audience recording that was supplemented at the time of release was used as a mono version, it is presumed that it was processed to eliminate the difference in the roughness of the sound of the SBD part. On the other hand, the label “BUFFALO ’81” (different label from the later European brand) is the first release title of this show itself and is the only title to date that only includes audience recordings. The pitch was extremely high, and there was a problem with incomplete recording up to “Brown Sugar”. Also, since it was released nearly 30 years ago, there are probably very few people who own that item now. Due to a combination of these factors, the appearance of Buffalo 81’s master cassette and complete version that appeared on the Internet this month was an unexpected opportunity for the hidden audience to see the light of day, which would have been overlooked unless you were a big fan. I did. Anyway, it is a surprisingly on sound image, and the spacious sense of presence and freshness are wonderful. In particular, the sense of realism is what was sacrificed the most with the previous PA-out sound source, and it is a very enjoyable sound source because it clearly conveys the atmosphere of a stadium show held in the afternoon sunlight. . Although the old “BUFFALO ’81” also had the problem of being too high in pitch, the freshness of the sound source itself was excellent, and I am reminded that it was a sound source that was worthy enough to be released on CD at that time. . The sound source was at a fairly high level from the beginning, but perhaps because the taper had changed its position or because the sound output from the venue had improved, the visibility got even better from the middle of “When The Whip Comes Down” and I finally started listening. It becomes easier. Anyway, the Stones were loose on this day. I’m sure there are many people who have felt that, but even though it’s early in the tour, it’s surprising that a big group holding a concert at a stadium could put on such a slapstick performance. Although it can’t be helped that they gave up 100 steps and performed like that in Philadelphia, the first stop of the 1981 tour (please check out “PHILADELPHIA 1981 DAY 1”, which is now on sale!), it was the stage on the third day of the tour. But it’s still as loose as ever. What’s more, the sound quality is so good that the slapstick performance stands out all the more. In the first place, even after the opening band call by Bill Graham ends, “Under My Thumb” does not start immediately and there is a strange pause. Even in this scene alone, the opening was so slow that it seemed like a completely different band from the official Hampton. The performance itself that started from there lacked momentum. Compared to that, “When The Whip Comes Down”, which was in the repertoire of the previous tour, has much more momentum, but this time there was a problem that the guitar sound stopped playing in the latter half of the performance. This probably means that not only the band but also the staff were not used to touring yet. The ultimate is “Down The Road Apiece” which was a rare repertoire of the 1981 tour. I can still give up on Keith and Ronnie making mistakes on stage (lol), but it’s strange that Charlie is making a big mistake here. He made a mistake in the timing of the intro, and in the end, he made a mistake in the structure of the song and was the only one trying to get to the ending, so it was very difficult. Even Chuck Berry’s songs, which everyone is supposed to be good at, are shaky. Furthermore, the structure of the live performance itself has not yet been determined, and the positions of “She’s So Cold” and “Let Me Go” are completely opposite, and the performance of both is uncertain. As you can see from this, the songs introduced from this tour are basically shaky (bitter smile). That’s why when they get to “Just My Imagination” and “Miss You,” which they have played on the previous tour, they are played with a calm atmosphere, and the difference between them is interesting. Even in “Tops”, which was a rare performance only at the beginning of the tour, I can’t deny the feeling that Mick is exhaling alone, and even the scene where he takes off the lead without being able to get through Ronnie etc. Furthermore, even “Start Me Up”, which was a symbol of the Stones in 1981, got lost in the middle of the performance. The final part of the live performance was recorded by the audience, which was not heard in the previously released “BUFFALO ’81”, but at this point it seemed that they were still undecided whether to finish with “Satisfaction” or “Street Fighting Man”, and on this day it was the latter. Play. By this time, the performance had become much more dignified, and I realized that it was a day when the engine was really slow to start (lol). Of course, that slapstick feeling is the biggest charm of Buffalo 81, but with this upper version audience, it is a masterpiece document from the beginning of the tour that will make you feel hungry. (Remastered Memo) Pitch raised by about 0.6% and phase corrected slightly. There’s not much of a difference, but the tendency towards the right towards the end of Miss You has been slightly corrected. Slightly EQed. Only a very small amount to avoid increasing hiss. I don’t think there’s much of a difference, but it’s a little brighter. I don’t raise it above 10khz.
