Description

Even if you’re not a Stones fan, any rock fan will have heard the eternal masterpiece “GET YER YA-YA’S OUT” at least once. Considering that the Stones’ first live album “GOT LIVE IF YOU WANT IT” was compiled into one album even using a foul technique of covering the studio recording with cheers, “GET YER~” should be called the Stones’ first live album. The contents are condensed from the 1969 US tour, which was the origin of the rough and loose Stones show. As evidenced by the fact that live recordings were made with multi-tracks that could produce this album, it seems that the Stones also had plans to make a live album from this tour. However, the production had to be rushed due to the appearance of an unexpected item. The cause of such a sudden development was the Stones’ first bootleg “LIVE’R THAN YOU’LL EVER BE”. This historic masterpiece, created by Taper, who later called himself TMOQ, recorded the Oakland performance on November 9th with a sound image that was as on as any audience recording at the time. Above all, the fact that the November show was released in 1969 was something that would have been impossible for an official release, as mixing and jacket production would have taken time. On the contrary, “GET YER~” was released in September 1970, nearly a year after the tour. . “GET YER YA-YA’S OUT!” was released at the Stones’ initiative to compete with “LIVE’R THAN~”, which caused a huge sensation. Due to the time constraints of one LP, the content was far from a complete recording of the show (as was the case with “LIVE’R THAN~”), but it is counted as one of the masterpieces due to the completeness unique to an official live album using multi-tracks. However, “completeness” does not mean a faithful reproduction of the actual show, but also includes the meaning of a live album. Mick’s vocals, which had already been practiced in “GOT LIVE IF YOU WANT IT”, were replaced in many places. In addition, on songs like “Carol” and “Honky Tonk Women,” the recording microphones set up in front of the amplifiers of each instrument picked up the sound coming back from the stage monitors, so Mick’s singing voice survived on the day, and it ended up double-tracked with the re-recorded vocals. Even more notable was Mick’s singing style, which was completely different from the actual performance. Mick replaced his vocals on most of the songs on this album, which later became a custom in the production of Stones live albums. By the time the album was released, not only had “LIVE’R THAN YOU’LL EVER BE” been widely distributed among fans, but items like “STONED-M.S.G.”, which was an audience recording of the performance that became the basis of the live album, were also on the market, and any maniac of a certain level would have noticed the strangeness of Mick’s overly powerful singing in “GET YER YA-YA’S OUT!”. It was already clear from the opening song “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” On the actual stage, Mick sang in a loose rock style, but here he sings in a powerful tone like an R&B singer. Keith’s passionate singing harmony adds to the mix. On stage, he only served as a backing chorus for “Honky Tonk Women,” but here he and Mick sing together in the opening and finale “Street Fighting Man.” If you are a maniac who has listened to the LP mentioned above, you can’t help but point out that he didn’t actually sing or harmonize that passionately! However, it is certain that this replacement has now become a “flavor.” Furthermore, it is impossible to fit all the songs on the set list at that time on one LP, and yet the show at that time was not even as long as a two-disc set. This means that some songs are dropped. Although that can’t be helped, some songs have been shortened and edited. This technique also escalates in later Stones live albums. With such careful work, the official live album is a first-class product. Although the documentary quality was halved, it was still a masterpiece that conveyed the enthusiasm of the 1969 tour. That’s why maniacs had an endless dream of “If only I could hear the complete version of the show with this sound quality…”. It was the finest sound sources such as Oakland and San Diego that lowered such a drink with audience recording. However, in 2009, 40 years after the release of “GET YER YA-YA’S OUT!”, the dream came closer to reality as the album was upgraded. Tracks that were not included in the “GET YER~” main body were released with perfect quality that was comparable to the album. In the face of the suddenly blessed situation, I would like to use those sound sources to listen to the actual live set list… In addition, such rearrangements are easy with modern technology. Some maniacs may have tried it, and there were items that were actually reassembled. This release goes even further, not just rearranging the songs in the actual set list, but also compensating for some of the shortened edits seen in “GET YER~”, achieving a next-level finish that realizes a complete recording of the songs. As enthusiasts will know, “GET YER~” has an acetate containing a rough mix. This time, the cuts were adjusted by using it as a compensation. It was in two places, the first being the second half of the well-known “Sympathy for the Devil”. By compensating for about 50 seconds, a complete recording was achieved with full soundboard recording. Rather, what will surprise enthusiasts around the world in this adjustment is the part just before the performance of “Midnight Rambler” begins. The part just before Mick announces the name of the song and gets the crowd excited is over 30 seconds long, and the acetate version is longer. In the process of further work, it was discovered that there is a subtle cut of 0:15 seconds between Charlie’s drum roll and Mick’s shout in the part recorded on the official version (the part at 0:42 on the main version). Since the acetate disc was recorded without any cuts, we connected it seamlessly, including that part. In this way, not only can you hear that masterpiece live album in the actual set list, but the acetate has also been supplemented to make it the longest recording possible. This is not only a literal complete album, but also an excellent document of the 1969 US tour that could not be fully reproduced in the original “GET YER YA-YA’S OUT!” Of course, the sound quality is perfect, and “GET YER~” is really cool when you can enjoy it in this complete state!
